Hi all,

Woke up this morning with a sore throat and tongue ,feels like burning ,no other signs ,its got a bit easier through the day but not a lot. I had a really strong flavoured pack of prawn cocktail crisps last night ,but surely they arent the culprit? 18 months post treatment, could it be something like burning mouth syndrome or am i still getting reaction from strong food flavours ! Anyone else had this problem so far down the line?

  • 3 years since CRT finished... still get a periodic sore mouth... some things seem to set it off...Biotene gel or Difflam usually settles it... our oral cavity took a fair bit of punishment....part of our new normal?

  • Hi a spider. Yes I had a period of burning mouth syndrome for around 3 years and even now I can occasionally get it. I kept a food diary and my triggers were acidic , vinegars literally anything with  vinegar think mustard mayo sauces. Citric as well . Fermented food yoghurt cheeses I adore cheese I used to say to myself is a cheese sandwich worth the pain and often is was. Palm oil as well I got to the point I’d looking  at back of foods to se ingredients. So your prawn crackers would likely have something in the flavourings.
my tongue used to be sore and Scarlett. I don’t get it anywhere near as much.
    biioxtra mouthwash helped it’s a neutral p h.
saltwater and bib carb rinses helped

our taste buds take a battering and takes a long time regenerate.

It will get better but the late onest  side effects  can continue. Just be aware. I’m living a fab life, now 8 years post treatment

  • Hi Spider, I'm over 8 years post treatment now, and even now crisps can sometimes make my mouth and tongue sore for a couple of days. I also still get tingling on my tongue; it's all part of the new normal.

    Ray.

  • I didn't even know about that one.

  • Remember we don’t get all the side effects. I never got lymphoedema. We are all different in how we react to similar treatment. Dry mouth is the most common late onset side effect that many if us get. I’m 7 years post and my dry mouth is manageable at night time I use an xyimelts

    best wishes
