It was my understanding that no matter the treatment for tongue cancer (please see my profile) that reviews were carried out for five years. Since my surgery the review periods have been approximately at seven week junctures. My last appointment was at the start of December and it was mentioned that my recovery was expected and my care could be passed to another professional (ie external dentist) but I pointed out that I did not have dentist. I have managed to find a dentist and had an appointment with him on 26th January and he is willling to see me every six months. My last hospital review letter stated that it was their intention to see me every three to four months. This will mean I be seen at the start of March (surgeon) and then at the end of July and then end of January 2025 with dentist. Not sure If I should ask to be seen by surgeon between July and January or would this not make a difference if there was a reoccurrence?
Hi Mick. I can only guess that since your surgery was curative, your SNB negative and you didn’t have radiotherapy the recurrence risk is so low the hospital is happy to leave you in the hands of your dentist.
Can you contact your CNS to clarify?

Thanks for your reply Dani. It has been mentioned before that the likelihood of the cancer coming back was low. I don't have a CNS but I think I will ask more questions about things to look out for at my next review and what I would do if I had any concerns.
Normally even if you are discharged from reviews you remain a patient with access to your team quickly. Just make sure you have that contact number.
Good luck.

Hi Mick I’m over the 5 year mark and have been told I will always have access to the department, even though they have discharged me. If I’ve any issues to bypass gp and contact medical team via my cns or medical secretary. I would clarify that with them. Amd make sure yiuve contacts. My consultant always said I would know if there was anything amiss before the scope did. So my advise is live your life attend when they want you to enjoy living.

Hi Mick. lol you know me so well ! The cases are down and we’re getting ready for early March. One life just live it and we are. Yes pen and paper plus write questions down in duplicate one for you one for them. That way you tick off the questions and you don’t miss out. I even did that on my last visit.!!
