Hi, it feels very surreal to be writing this message - a month ago we were blissfully unaware of what was ahead! My husband (62) went to the GP with a lump on his neck - several weeks later following xray, ultrasound and finally a Biopsy, confirmation received on 3rd January that it is cancer. At that point Head & Neck specialist mentioned HPV and that he suspected tonsil/tongue area but not sure. My husband is very fit and active and a non-smoker. Had a CT scan on 17th Jan, we met the specialist again. Told that my husband now needed a Pet scan as CT results were inconclusive. Mentioned that the cancer seemed to have not spread and was contained within the area she suspected. Pet Scan tomorrow and then a further 2 weeks before we get results. Both trying to be positive but so hard to take in...the waiting is horrendous and I'm imagining his cancer spreading all the time we are waiting. Any advice please - from reading through this fabulous forum it looks a long road ahead! Thanks
Hi Bethie1 welcome to our little community. First take a deep breath. Yes it’s a long road ahead but hold onto the fact that HPV positive throat cancer is curable. It responds really well to radiotherapy. Most of us here were perfectly ok one day, fit, well and the next day we had cancer.
Try not to dwell on being anxious. He’s in good hands, things are moving apace. I was 4 months from finding my tongue cancer to beginning of treatment and I’ve just had my fifth anniversary.
Dint bother with Google. Stay with us and ask here.
Best wishes .
Dani

PS don’t worry about the extra scan. They are looking for the primary and any more lymph nodes affected. PET can pick these up better.

Hi Bethie1, welcome from me also. You're right it is all very scary, and the waiting is unbearable. However, be reassured, by what Dani has said, these cancers are curable, with many of us on here being living proof of that. Once all the testing and the scans have been done you will get his treatment plan, which will all be explained to you fully, you will feel better about it all then. Ask as many questions as you want someone will always answer if they can.
Ray.
Hi Bethie
T2N1M0 tonsil cancer...diagnosed February 2023....Chemoradiotherapy finished June 2023
I first went to my GP in mid 2021 with an enlarged tonsil, then later with a lump on my neck...told both times that it was nothing sinister...Dec 2022 another GP referred me for urgent ENT investigation...many biopsies and scans later it was confirmed as tonsil cancer...luckily CRT treatment worked.
Yes it was an extremely worrying period waiting for scan/biopsy results but the outcomes for patients after CRT are usually pretty positive.
Best of luck
Peter
Hi Bethie1 Everything you have described happened to me in 2021, it’s natural to be scared, I was terrified, this wonderful forum and the people in it, got me through. I also was a few month from start to beginning of treatment, and the outlook for HPV is good. You will get good advice on here, my first piece of advice was stay off dr Google. I had two operations and didn’t need radiotherapy or chemotherapy, so I cannot offer any input, but there are others who can, also please read their blogs, inspirational
Hi I could have written this! My husband has been through exact same process as yours starting in November . he’s 58, tee total non smoker and vegan so it really doesn’t seem to discriminate! My husband pet scan showed it had not spread and he has now had a tonsillectomy and biopsies from tongue and also the lump on his neck mostly removed and biopsies. They revealed cancer in his right tonsil and we are now awaiting 6 weeks of radiotherapy and 2 chemo sessions but have been told that whilst the treatment is brutal the results are very good. Please try and stay positive, I know how sick you are feeling but it won’t make things any better by worrying, he’s in good hands, the waiting is definitely the worst. Wishing you all the best xxx
