Sore and burning throat when I eat and drink certain things

There are things I used to be able to eat and drink certain things but now they really burn my throat, even my medicine. Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen before. I have an appointment with my consultant on Thursday so I think I should mention it to him.  It is limiting what I eat and drink and has been going on for about a month now.

  • Hi Lilian. You’re around ten months out of treatment? Things should be settling down but there are probably trigger foods doing this.
I didn’t have too much if a problem but I know Hazel had to pay for eating cheese with a good few days of discomfort.
It’s likely just that but it’s good you have a review. You’ll get a scope so I’m sure your consultant will put your mind at rest.
Make a list of the things that give you pain to take.
    Best wishes

  • Thank you Dani I will do that on Thursday xx

  • Hi Lillian. Yes has Danis said I’ve had an issue for a few years with certain trigger foods I kept a diary and wrote down what was affecting me. I was getting a burning tongue from hard cheese anythjng fermented like yoghurts Greek yogurt inwas fine any type  of pickles vinegar or citric affected me.  Just like tha5 a few months ago it stopped. Mention it at yiur next review ,but it does happen and I accepted it. If I really wanted eg cheese I had it and paid the price for it.

  • Hi Lilian

Things will get better. What can you currently eat ?  You just need to keep trying what you fancy and if it does not work then you can have another go it in a few weeks' time again. I finished my treatment 15 months ago and there are still quite a few things that I cannot have such as spicy food, some meat or anything with black pepper. For a long time I could not have bananas as they burnt my mouth... I tried one 4 weeks' ago and it worked ! It tasted good and it did not burn my mouth. Same with sausages...I could not have any meat at all for a long time...I went out yesterday and challenged myself to ordering sausage and mash ...even though the sausages had a bit too much black pepper...I did manage one and it tasted good.  So even though eating is still complicated, I think it is important to try to remain positive about it try to carry on exploring new ways of eating what you enjoy enjoy and can have.  Of course you should mention what you are experiencing to your consultant as this will put your mind at rest.  All the best for your appointment on Thursday and have a wonderful Xmas. You will get there. Slight smileChristmas treeSunflower

  • Hi Fab I am still not eating much solid food yet mainly puréed and soft food but I did manage a whole banana a couple of days ago so fingers crossed I am getting there.
