Post treatment imaging

I am 12 weeks post treatment today. Had my MRI scan last night. Bit of a long story but actually had a scan at 9 weeks and whilst things looked ok the images were not clear enough hence the repeat scan. Anyway, I was hoping to get results in the next 2 weeks. But my Consultant managed to get the images so that my case could be discussed at MDT today. He called me earlier to say that the results are ‘good… really good’. There was a ‘but’ in that he wants to do another scan in 3 months as my neck is not as healed as my throat. However he is very happy with how things look. I am feeling relieved, happy, emotional and a little overwhelmed all at once!

  • Hi

    Such good news

I remember you posting that you were having a scan at nine weeks. I must say I was quite perplexed because you are still healing. It’s the main reason that post treatment scans are done at 12 weeks and now that most scans are PET/CT, which are even more sensitive than MRI, a lot of consultants are arranging them at 16 weeks.
Even at 16 I had  a hotspot which had to be checked but rather than subjecting me to another three months of anxiety it was biopsied a week later.

9 week scans, being inconclusive have to be repeated adding stress to the patient

  • I finished 1 Sept so 12 weeks today if I calculate right. My consultant said he would arrange PET/CT when I see him 11 Dec. Given Christmas I suspect the scan will be early to mid Jan. If so 18-19 weeks. Fingers crossed!

  • What happened was that my Consultant put me forward for the scan thinking it would take 3-6 weeks for the appointment to come through. Then the MRI team called me that Sunday to come in for a cancellation appt first thing the next morning. I said that my Dr was expecting me to be 12-15 weeks post treatment by the time the scan came through but they insisted I take the slot. So I had the scan at 9 weeks and as suspected it was a bit early. Nonetheless they could see improvement and so they were just expecting good results from this scan.

  • I finished my treatment on 1 Sep and was expecting my scan to be on Dec and Jan. When I saw my Consultant he was happy to put me forward for a scan but was expecting it to take a while for me to get in (as apparently even urgent scans are taking 3 weeks!). Anyway, I am pleased that 12 weeks on the treatment has worked. I kept worrying that I was somehow resistant to the treatment as my recovery was pretty reasonable (albeit challenging and gruelling at times) so today has brought a lot of relief.
