Just going into week 7 since finishing treatment.Have put on 11lbs and trying lots of different foods.Did anyone else have a real problem with fruit ? I can't even take fruit flavoured yoghurt.Have ENT appointment on 21/12 and just wondered what to expect.Dietician talking about getting  PEG removed then too which I'm so pleased about.

Thanks,

Turi

  • Hi Turi, sounds like you are doing great, just try all kinds of food, some will be fine, some not so, scrambled or poached eggs go down well, also milk puddings, porridge with lots of cream. It's trial and error really. Don't worry you will get there.

  • Hi Turi a lot of fruit is acid so you have to be careful with it I could manage bananas and mango fairly quickly but it took a year for me to enjoy an orange; addicted to them now. I’m ok with everything but I still have to peel apples. Even five years on some fruit that my husband says is very sweet I find tart. Trial and error is key.

  • Hi Turi

I had  PEG removed some weeks ago, now enjoying some of my food, some food still has little or no taste but things are slowly improving.

Eating now includes going to the chippy for treats...another wee step forward.

As for fruit? strawberries and raspberries are manageable for me, apple crumble and custard is a treat.

Dietitian from Ninewells hospital Dundee phoned yesterday and after 10 minute conversation discharged me...dietitian was happy with my progress and my weight ...oncology teams will monitor and support you.

PEG removal was fairly straightforward and relatively painless.

    Best of luck

  • Hi Ray,

Yes semolina is going down great and have porridge every morning with lovely honey I get from a friend who has bees.Have managed cheap soft white bread with thick layer of butter this week too so that's been a step forward.

  • Hi Peter,

Actually feeling quite nervous about PEG coming out.Do they just give it a pull ? Does it leak afterwards ?

  • Hi Dani,

Tried a couple of slices of pineapple today.EEK ! Not a good idea.I buy those wee mini packets of things so as not to waste food I've got melon for tomorrow so will see how that goes. The thought of a lovely big juicy orange is actually making my stomach rumble.

  • Don't worry about having your peg removed, it takes seconds and is almost painless, they will put a large plaster over where it came out.

  • Hi Turi

Expert nurse advances the PEG in then a very quick pull out...over in seconds.

As Ray states PEG removal is pretty straightforward and painless, whole procedure only took a few minutes, nurse explained every step, slight leakage at site for a couple of days...plenty of dressings supplied by hospital , used Sudocrem on site for about a week to stave off any potential probs.

Yes!!! But I bet it got your saliva going!
Melon should be ok. Eat it from the fridge.

  • Hi, I didn’t want to have the PEG and actually managed to get through treatment without using it so was delighted to have it removed a couple of weeks ago. It took seconds! There was some leakage which quickly turned to a light seep! The ‘hole’ closed up by the time I went to bed that evening. It has left a blemish but even that is improving.
