My husband is now 8 weeks post treatment from p16 posative sqaumous carcinoma .he has stopped taking the fortisips and is eating small meals 3 times a day . Still suffering with mouth ulcers badly and slurring his words ,just wondering how long others slurred for with speaking .thanks in advance

  • Hi

Good news that your husband is managing to eat. It’s a real milestone.
My radiotherapy ulcers took a long time to heal but they stopped being painful by 12 weeks. I must admit my speech wasn’t slurred at all. Might your husband be slurring simply because his mouth is still painful? When is his next review? You could contact his CNS to make sure speech and language are there.

  • Hi Irish13

The lump on his tongue may be the reason he is slurring his speech. You don't realise how much you use your tongue in speech. You have to get it into lots of different positions e.g. front of the mouth for some sounds e.g. 'h; sound.

In relation to the bad breath. It can be quite painful trying to keep your mouth clean when you have painful ulcers so this may be  contributing. He may still be at the stage when he can only manage mouth washes to swish around his mouth and using bicarb rinses after he eats to try and move on any food residue. The bad breath subsides once you are able to get back to brushing teeth.

It's early days but do ask his medical team for more info.

    Best wishes
