Surgery cancelled

Hi all

so I went for my surgery last Tuesday to remove my soft palate and it was cancelled due to extremely high blood pressure

i don’t have a blood pressure problem generally it was just down to anxiety I was supposed to be the first person in the op theatre but then found out they had not made my obturator plate because the impressions had been lost in the system so they had to be made again so they rushed me off to do them which is traumatic in itself with a limited mouth opening 8 hours after I arrived at the hospital I was finally taken into theatre but by this time my BP was sky high and they wouldn’t take the chance of the anaesthetic

I was kept overnight and had IV to bring it down then it dipped dramatically then they had to inject saline to bring it back up but they put me in 10mg Omladipine anyway until after the op which is scheduled for tomorrow

my BP is too low now so I’ve had a few dizzy days but I’m hoping that it won’t spike tomorrow above the safe level so the op can go ahead as the delays are really concerning because of the spread of the cancer

  • Hi Sharon. That’s a horrid thing to go through. I suffer atrocious white coat syndrome. Let’s hope they are on top of it. Best of luck.

  • Thankyou Danny

I never did until after my first cancer journey and now it always happens whenever a health professional takes a reading

i monitor it at home and it is always spot in

  • That sounds tough Sharon. Hope the op goes ahead shortly.

I've always suffered from white coat syndrome. It's fine at home but one time (for example) a GP took it just because it hadn't been done for a while. He told me to buy a home blood pressure meter and if it was the same the next day to go to hospital. By the time I'd got the machine and taken it at home it was normal again:) Slow steady breathing helps for me - that way it is only very high, not 'you are about to explode and die', pressure.

  • Hi Sharon, I hope you have a better day tomorrow, and you op can go ahead.

  • Hi Mike

My BP was 207 over 115 by the time they took me down so it was a no no it’s usually 125 over 85 so massive spike

Praying  tomorrow will be a different scenario now they have forceably lowered it some of my readings are now 89 over 53 hopefully that will allow for the anxiety spike

  • Maybe they could premed you.

  • Hi Sharon

So sorry to hear about the BP issue, it is stressful enough for you without having that happen. I did not ever have BP problems either until I started on the cancer journey. They had to put me on BP tablets after my first maxillectomy and I had never suffered from high BP before if anything I tend to low BP. I had to go home on the tablets and got the nurse to monitor it for me when she visited for the first week and I then stopped taking them and everything was back to normal. Stress plays havoc with your system.

I have everything crossed that things will go better this time around. Now you know more about what to expect the stress levels may not be as high and  maybe the BP will decide to behave itself.

    Best of luck

    Lyn
