So I had my appointment with my cancer team today they told me I’m not eligible for proton therapy after all because I can get surgery on my cancer although complicated because of previous radiation in terms of scar tissue, fibrosis and trismus which developed many years up the line

A lot to take in but basically I have to have most of my soft palette, uvula and right tonsil area removed although tonsil has been fried by previous radiotherapy in 2009 the area has to be removed and then they will place an obturator where the gap is

I’m horrified and just trying to process it not sure how my swallowing will be afterwards and my voice will definitely alter

it’s really hard after going through radiotherapy chemotherapy and a neck dissection previously to now be faced with this

  • Oh QueenB really sorry to hear this news. You have been through so much so far. I think you need to step back and breath . You have dealt with this before and  You will do it again. Take one day at a time . I wish you all the best X

  • Hi QueenB

Take it one day at a time. It sounds as though your medical team have it worked out and are going to do everything they can to sort it out.

I had my initial diagnosis of jaw cancer in  2013 and then had further ops in 2019 and 2022 for more cancer in other areas of my jaw so I know it can be rather daunting to have to go through it all over again. For my op in 2019 I had a left maxillectomy and had an obturator.Even with the trismus I had, It worked out really well although you have to be prepared for a few fittings. The first obturator is only temporary while the swelling goes down and then they fit you for a second one which fits much better. I found it did affect my eating and I could only manage a soft diet but my swallow was fine, but it may be different for you. As long as I had the obturator in I could speak perfectly well it was only when it was out that speech was more difficult to understand. Sometimes some fluid would come out one side of my nose when I drank but not always and it was not really a big issue. I managed with the obturator well until my op in 2022 which was a maxillectomy on the other side so there was no longer anything to attach the obturator to so I was a bit sad to say goodbye to it.

It should work out fine for you once you have a chance to adapt to the difference.

Life is still good for me and it will be again for you.

    Thinking of you

  • So sorry to hear about your news. I am sending you loads of love and positive vibes. SunnySunflower

  • So sorry to hear this, but I know how you feel. I had neck dissection, chemo and RT for base of tongue cancer in 2014. Thought I was all clear in 2019 but last year got tumour on other side of my tongue, and in my lung, so 2 operations for me, the lung one being the worst. Getting back to my ‘normal’ this year, then diagnosed with throat cancer, more surgery. But just have to keep going - you will too, it’ll be tough but it can be done. I wish you all the luck in the world x

  • Gosh so sorry to hear your endless journey it’s the cancer that keeps on giving I really hope this is the very last time for you x

  • Hi

Were all your cancers squamous cell and HPV related ?

what surgery have you had for the latest throat cancer ?

    Best regards

  • I hope it’s the last time too. Consultant can’t be sure, we’ve agreed on Never say never Confused

They were all squamous cell, the first, base of tongue cancer was HPV. The others weren’t . I had laser surgery, resection, on my latest throat cancer. Frozen sections were tested whilst I was in theatre and he’s confident he got it all.

    Kind regards x
