Hi everyone,
Just wanted to pop an update on.
Hubby is half way through his 30 day radiotherapy, side effects are kicking in, but I really wanted to pick your brains about the horrible mucous he is getting in his mouth/throat.
Have you any advice how to deal with this please?
He seems to be constantly trying to clear it and spit it out. It makes him gag and ruins whatever bit of appetite he has left
Thank you so much for your support,
Paula x
Hi Paula I had a nebuliser which helped a bit plus a humidifier in my bedroom. I also moved into spare room was easier on both of us. Tissues became my best friend constant spitting if he’s got a peg might be time to start using it as he needs hydration and nutrition. Remember medication fir when pain starts if he’s not already in them. He can ry flat Diet Coke ginger ale I found soda water gave some relief dispersing the mucus. But to be honest it’s part of the process.

Thank you Hazel, yes we have started using his PEG more and have been given feeds as losing weight too quickly - he now has 4 feeds a day and she said might go up to 6. So pleased he had the PEG fitted as has given us another option to get water, meds and feeds in as he is finding it more painful to swallow as well.
I wil look at nebuliser/humidifier as well.
Thank you again for your support.

Hi Paula!
My oncologist prescribed me some Carbocisteine that seems to help a little bit . I slept propped up for a few months and always had a glass of water near my bed as well as a box of tissue. I also used and still use a humidifier (really lovely smell). My partner also moved to the spare room some nights as I was making so much gurgling noises...Please do not worry, this is part of the side effects, the mucus will eventually ease up.
All the very best.

Hi Paula I also had carbusistine to help thin the mucus it did a little. Yes feeding tubes are lifesavers. Hazel x

I’m at 24/30 RT so a little bit further on. I’ve been using bicarbonate of soda or salt solution to gargle with. Brushing teeth tends to loosen things too and make it easy to spit mucous out. Sipping iced water is sometimes more effective than anything, for me anyway. I’m cautious not to try too hard to yak it all up as the soft palate and throat are tender enough as it is. Best of luck with everything.
