So today I had consultant appointment and he said surgery is my best option as I have already had radiation 14 years ago and it has left a lot of throat damage behind in the same area
I have to have the back of my throat cut away uvula and soft pallete area my cancer is stage 1 and less than 2 cms I asked if it would include tonsillectomy but he said I have no tonsils as they have previously had radiation and only half an uvula left
I never knew as I can’t really see the back of my throat unless I push my tongue right down as it will no longer bob out with the radiation fibrosis so it’s hard to see
he said the op will change my voice and I will sound nasally but he will see how it goes and would consider a reconstruction op to build throat area up using skin from my inner forearm which he thinks I would benefit from
It all sounds very daunting but I have to give it a go and get this cancer removed
apparently it’s not recurrence cancer of the one I had 14 years ago it’s a new cancer and I am just susceptible to tumours in the throat area which is very unlucky and very concerning
i wonder if it’s due to the previous radiation that it’s happened again
i wonder if it’s due to the previous radiation that it’s happened again
I'm sure cancers caused by radiation take decades to appear. That's why kids get Proton. But I'm sure your consultant can put your mind at rest.
Good luck with the op which sounds challenging but your team seem to be on the ball. They will do their best for you, I"m sure

I’m so sorry to hear your bad news, it’s another hurdle to get over in what has already been a traumatic experience. When I was diagnosed with throat cancer in March the consultant thought it was too soon for it to be due to radiation damage. Then I reminded him that it’s been 9 years since my chemo radiotherapy treatment and he reconsidered it as a possibility. So that could be your answer. I didn’t have the reconstruction surgery, I had laser surgery. Did they give you any idea of the waiting time for your procedure? I know how tough it will be, be sure that you’ll find understanding and empathy amongst this group. Best of luck x
Thankyou Peach
I think I should get surgery date when I go on Monday my consultant said he is anxious to get it done
I’m not looking forward to it but needs must
Hi QueenB
I'm so sorry to hear that you need such a big op. Your positive attitude should really help although I understand your apprehension as it is all a bit daunting but you will get there.
Best wishes for the op and a quick non eventful recovery.
