I have been told for now that I can only eat food that has been well blended . What I need to know is could I buy frozen meals for one and blend them. Also any other suggestions anyone has with living on my own. I am wasting so much food because I’m not sure what to do , any help or ideas would be very much appreciated.. I am 15 weeks post treatment and have not had an appointment yet for my pet scan.. Lillian xxx
Hi Lilian. Buy a vitamix which can blend anything so you can have a well balanced meal and blend it. They aren’t cheap but really worth it. There’s only so much you can do with soups and smoothies

Don’t worry about that. I had mine at 16 and it still showed up a hot spot that had to be investigated. I think if oncologists had their way it would be left till six months but they have to factor in patient anxiety. I’m sure it will come soon.

I have had a cold for 2 weeks and the last couple of days I have been running a fever and temperature.
I am taking soluble paracetamol but I am struggling to get even yogurt and semolina down.
I know that it will have to run its course but I have lost weight and I am concerned that if it doesn’t go away I will lose even more weight. I am literally drained and so weak and I would be grateful for any advice.
Thankyou Lillian xx

Hi Durhamlady
I have been eating pureed food for 4 years now and blend a frozen meal that I have heated up (I don't want preparing meals to be too onerous but you could make your own stews etc and freeze portions but I am a bit lazy) and add in extra steamed veg. I steam extra veg and freeze in portions to later thaw and throw into my heated frozen meal. You just add extra fluid e.g. gravy, milk etc to get the consistency you want when you blend it. I find this is enough for about 3 meals depending on how much you eat.I sometimes puree a bought quiche for one and add extra veg but again you could make your own quiche and freeze in portions. Tuna mornay is also tasty pureed.
I blend steamed or tinned fruit and put over weetbix that is pre- moistened with milk or Fortisip and add custard or yoghurt. Sometimes I moisten with milk or Fortisip a slice of sponge cake (there are quite a lot of different flavours on the market) and add pureed fruit and yoghurt over the top. I try to get no sugar yoghurt and tinned fruit in juice not syrup to keep the sugar down. You can also make smoothies with different soft fruits to keep the tastes interesting. You can make your own desserts e.g. sago, semolina, self saucing puddings, blancmange etc if you want to and blend them in portions and freeze, but again I am a bit lazy and only do that occasionally.
I use a cheaper version of the nutribullet for steamed, soft food and that works well for small amounts.I have just invested in a Vitamix blender that is quite expensive but have been able to extend my repertoire as it chpps/blends hard fruit and veg and nuts that do not work so well in my cheaper blender. You can blend anything in the Vitamix but if you are only on pureed food short term it is not worth the investment.
I have passed my menu by my dietician and she is happy that it is fairly well balanced. I also drink 3 Fortisip a day to make sure I get enough calories and am maintaining my weight.
Once you get your head around eating differently it is fine and you can vary the flavours so it does not get boring.

Thank you so much for that information Sophie it means a lot. Hopefully I am only on blended till the swelling goes down on my epiglottis but this is something only time will tell. You have given me lots of information on cheaper alternatives and I am very grateful for that.
Do you still have a peg in or do you just drink your fortisips.
Take care, Lillian xx

Hi Lillian
Glad that there are some ideas that you can pick up on to make life a bit easier. I'm sure the swelling will go down but it will take time so fingers crossed the pureed diet is only short term.
It is 9 weeks since my last reconstruction surgery (upper jaw) and I was on a nasogastric tube for 2 weeks but now am able to drink with a cup which is great. Only drawback is that there is a lot of spillage as my lips do not meet properly on the right side of my mouth but I am getting better at it and most of it goes down.
Best wishes with your ongoing recovery.

Hi Durhamlady
I put this up a while ago for people, you could use some of the ideas and blend it down to what you can manage,ie liquid or puree.
I live on my own, so i know what you mean about the wastage.
I hope it helps
