Severe coughing

Hi me again.  Husband had Stage 3 throat cancer in the nasopharanx centred on the piriformis sinus T4aN2bM0

This afternoon he's had a terrible bout of coughing which lasted at least 15 minutes possibly longer. He had a funny taste in his mouth then the coughing/retching started.  It's exhausted him.

In addition in the last couple of days he's had difficulty swallowing his Oxycontin tablets although he breaks the larger one in half. They actually get stuck.

Has something changed in his throat? Do we need to be calling his specialist? I think so but he's reluctant to do so.

He's tried taking the tablets with his protein drink but this didn't help - I witnessed him cough half of one of his tablets up.

Any advice gratefully received.

Thank you x

  • Hi

    Give his CNS a ring.
At the least they can change his OxyContin to the liquid form.

  • He's been admitted after waiting hours Sleepy  Had an emergency endoscopy yesterday morning.  They've discovered he's got a deformed epiglottis, a known issue with throat cancer radiotherapy.  He's on IV fluids and pain meds and 100mg morphine patch.

My research doesn't give any clear indication as to how this is treated in an adult (it can be an issue with newborns) A stomach rig would be the way to go to feed him; they had issues getting the endoscope inSleepy

Quite where this is going end, resolve or other resolution is anyone's guess Cry

And he was a great foodie - this is so sad Disappointed

  • Thanks for the update. At least they should get his pain under control. If he is aspirating he will have to be PEG fed for a while. You can only wait and see what happens, I suppose. Does his team have any idea?

  • Hi it's been a few days since I last posted.

He's still in hospital now on the cancer ward receiving excellent care. They tried to insert a feeding tube in his throat this morning but it failed. They're going to continue to treat with high dose corticosteroids and try again next week. If no then Wednesday he'll have a stomach rig installed with a view to discharge Fri or Sat.

His pain is under control, they're currently feeding him intravenously and he's feeling much better which is good news.

    He's in the best place.

Thank you for all your kind comments,  suggestions and concerns  - it is appreciated xx
