Update on my cancer journey

Hi everyone,

It has been nine months since my cancer journey started with two operations, neck dissection and base of tongue robotic surgery, followed by six weeks of daily radiotherapy.  The journey was not easy and had lots of twists and turns.  Please feel free to read my blog I kept going. My final diagnosis was MEC salivary glands, primary tumour base of tongue.  I can happily report the scan taken a few weeks back has shown the disease has disappeared which is great news. I still have a PET scan to do at the end of June but things are moving in the right direction and although I have been very unwell, happy to have made it this far feeling better.

I have recently been diagnosed with Carcinoma Unknown, CUP.  The next step is a neck dissection with the hope that the tumour/cancer cells on the right side of my neck can identify where the primary cancer is.  I may need a second operation to possibly remove my tonsils and part of my tongue.  This part is not confirmed.  My diagnosis has happened following a routine 2 yearly 360 health assessment provided by my work.  I have no symptoms and the cancer was discovered by chance.

The results of my 360 medical came back fit and healthy, (all green).  At the end of the assessment, the doctor examined me and could feel a lump on the right-hand side of my neck. I was given an open referral to get checked out.  I went for a scan and the radiologist could not see anything where the 360 Health assessment doctor described.  To be on the safe side the radiologist doctor scanned the other side of my neck and found the tumour by chance.  Still, lots of unknowns. I may also need chemotherapy and radio therapy.

I am currently waiting for the MDT assessment to happen before my operation is confirmed.  Lots of overwhelming information to unpack in such a short space of time.  I am fortunate that I have no symptoms.  The only thing that is getting me through this period is yoga which I thank can continue for now. My sleep has been impacted severely.

Sending hugs to everyone

  • Hi

Thank you for this update. So pleased that the primary has been found and fixed.
It’s a long road to healing and sometimes two steps back to the one step forward but day by day it’s doable.
    Fingers crossed for your PET

    Best wishes.

PS. Your post identifies you. Perhaps you can change your blog link and give it another name?

  • Hi BridgetJ

So sorry to hear that the cancer has appeared again but in a different place. It is a really stressful time for you and after going through an op and treatment before it must be daunting to have to go through more treatment.

This happened to me also although a different cancer to yours and I was very apprehensive about going through more treatment as I knew what was in store from my first op and treatment. All I could do was hunker down and grit my teeth and go ahead as the alternative options were not appealing. This was 6 years after my first op and radiotherapy.

It is amazing how resilient the body is and how well we recover from these ops. I recovered really well and although my life was slightly altered because of the type of op I had (a maxillectomy) I got back to doing most of the things I could do previously, went on holidays and generally was able to enjoy my life again and still do.

Take one day at a time and you will get through this and a year from now will look back on this as a distant memory.

Good luck with the op and treatment. Sending you positive thoughts. The yoga must really be helping keep it up.
