Hi everyone,
Thought I'd come on here to update on how my husband is doing.
We are 7 weeks post op for hpv16 cancer in lymph nodes, tonsil and base of tongue.
He is doing well although still finding shoulder and ear painful from operation.
We met with the oncologist consultant this afternoon and we talked about radiotherapy treatment starting in the next few weeks. He also said that hubby may not need chemo as the % of difference it makes is very small.
Consultant said about having a PEG fitted - Stuart was not too keen on this idea and said he'd rather wait to see if he needs it!! Would you recommend him having it as its already there to use if needed??
I feel positive after appointment but also worried that he is doing so well and now he's got to go through this treatment that could knock him back!
Thank you for listening,
Paula x
Hi Paula, it's good your husband is doing so well, after his surgery. As for a PEG, I would say to have that before his treatment starts, I had a RIG fitted, which I was100% reliant on from week 3, the way I look at it is, it's best to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. They really do take the worry out of not eating during and after treatment.
Regards Ray.
Hi Good treat ut like an insurance policy you hope you never need it but it’s there ready in case you do. Best advise if he needs to use it tell him it’s not a sign if weakness, his body will takes a battering so use it.

We should be getting an appointment in the next 2 weeks
If you’re going to go for PEG best done before treatment. It takes a week or so to settle and you don’t t really want all that on top of the chemoradiation

Base of tongue cancer. T2N0M0 6 weeks Radiotherapy finished January 2019
Hi Paula
My husband had a peg fitted and although at the time he was feeling over whelmed with scans and teeth out, peg fitted. It has been a huge positive. To beable to choose to stop forcing food down a very sore throat was a blessing.
I don't think having this procedure during rt treatment say I week 3/4 would be ideal at all. Added stress.
It took 15 mins, sore for a few days but my husband got used to it quickly and uses it for all food.. he still is managing to swallow water and meds.. it has helped so much with lower levels of weight loss. Last week in week 4 he only lost 0.3kg due to 2,500 calories a day of the protein shakes provided by the NHS.
This is just our experience but we can only recommend a peg..
