Vaccine Trial update

Hi everyone hope you're all keeping well. Just bobbed on to give a quick update on my Vaccine trial progress.

Last scan showed that the shrinkage has slowed down but still moving in the right direction. I've had 5 rounds of vaccines now and so far the tumour has shrunk from 4cms to 1.8cms which is just incredible !!

The Oncologist is still very happy with everything. I usually feel a bit rubbish for a week after the vaccine but then as my energy picks back up I feel absolutely fine. So lucky.

Next round of vaccines and scans are planned for early May. I'll let you all know how that goes.

In the meantime it's onwards and upwards. Hopefully this will be a big step for the future of Cancer treatments.... I'm incredibly lucky to be involved in it.

Stay well everyone

Trish xx

  • Hi Trish

Fabulous news, so pleased for you . Blush

  • Hi   and pleased to meet you!  Just wondering how you are getting on with the trial?  I joined the scancell modi-1 trial in June.   I am in cohort 4.  I have renal cancer.  My first line treatment (nivolumab) was doing its stuff.  First scan showed no significant change from the baseline.   (-1mm) I am getting dose 4 tomorrow - just off for bloods shortly!

  • Hi Trish, I’m so pleased to hear your news. I hope you don’t mind if I ask what the trial is called, and where do you have to go to receive the treatment? Is it an injection direct in to the cancer tumour or in your arm, or an infusion like chemo/immunotherapy? I’m asking because all other treatment hasn’t worked for my husband, so he is on a palliative chemo, which so far is going well, although he hasn’t had a scan yet. The consultant said as he seems to be tolerating the chemo well, and even seems to have picked up a bit, he may be able to put him forward for trials, so I was going to ask him about the trial you are on. Thank you.

  • Thank you. None of them are in Birmingham but that’s not to say we can’t participate as long as he can get there. At the moment he can, so I’ll speak to his consultant at the next review in 2 weeks

  • Hi there, so sorry to hear that the treatments your hubby has had haven't been working but everything crossed that the chemo is working some magic especially as he is feeling a little better.

The trial I was on was called Modi 1. Its run by a drug company called Scancell. The drug is given in a similar way to a vaccine, 4 vaccines are injected into an arm not the tumour. Initially it was every week, then it went to 12 weekly.

At first I had great results from it, my tumour shrunk by over 50% and everything was looking so posited. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, it stopped working and the tumour started growing once again.

Currently I am not on any treatment, I am waiting for another trial to be given the green light and hopefully that will make a difference. This one is called Fortify, it's an infusion given 3 times a week at first, it sounds quite heavy going but I'm up for giving it a go.

If all else fails I will have chemo again but at the moment I'm trying to keep that as my back up plan.

There are so many trials out there, more and more every day. I do hope your husband gets the opportunity to get on one. For me it's hope. Hope thst this one  old be the one and at the end of the day that's what keeps me going.

Keep in touch, hope you are taking care of yourself too. Its very difficult being the carer xxx

  • Hi there  hope that this vaccine works its magic for you, I will keep everything crossed that it does.

I was on cohort 1 so I just received the vaccine not any immunotherapy. I had ipreviously been on immunotherapy but it was only holding the tumour growth at bay, not making any difference.

I had a really great response to the vaccine initially. The tumour shrunk by 30-4]% after 2 doses then another 15% after the third dose.

Unfortunately that was as far as I got. Subsequent scans showed that the tumour was growing again. Its still not back to its initial size but ut is progressing , my Oncologist wanted me to have immunotherapy added to see if thst would kick start things but Scancell said that was outside of the protocol so wouldnt agree to fund it. So, unfortunately I have had to come off the trial now and am waiting to go on another trial once its been given the green light.

    • I really hope that you fair better and that it works for you, I'll keep everything crossed for you xx
  • Hi Tilly Mint. Sorry to hear the scancell trial eventually wasn’t working for you. Fingers x it’s given you some time ready for the other trial getting green light Pop on and update ys when you feel up to it   It’s is useful information for others who  are following in your footsteps sadly. Huge . Hugs Hazel xxx
