Hi everyone, just wanted to update this lovely forum on our experience so far. I messaged at the start of my husband's diagnosis and I have had so much support from this group, even though I have been sitting quietly in the background reading the posts, it's just a comfort knowing that others are out there experiencing the same.

Well hubby came home today after his op last Thursday to remove 2 lymph glands via a neck dissection,  plus both tonsils and some skin from tongue using the DA Vinci surgery system.

He is on oral morphine to help with the pain and is eating very small portions of soft food.

We are not due back for 4 weeks now, the consultants were happy with the surgery results but I suppose we will have to wait until another scan to make sure the cancer has all gone??

Feeling happy that the surgery is done and he is home bit still have those anxious feelings on what the future holds.

Thank you again for being there x

  • Well done both of you. It's a difficult time but it passes and I have my fingers crossed that no further treatment is needed.

Do let us know how your husband gets on.

    Best wishes

  • Thank you, I will sort out today xx

  • I had the same surgery done robotically. I was on morphine for the few days in hospital, then one week after coming home. After that it was codeine, paracetamol ibroprofen and pregabalin. Hope that helps

  • Thank you Debbie, just want to make sure I have everything ready here so that he doesn't have to suffer in pain

Thank you again for your info xx

  • Make sure you have laxatives. Movicol or Laxido. I took two laxido a day. Opiates cause constipation and you really don’t want that.

  • Thank you Dani - I will get some - don't think he wants that end to be a problem as well!!!!!! See no evil

  • Hi I had similar but they eventually did not remove much of my tongue, just cut it open then stitched it back again!  As the operation was last Thursday I guess the tonsil pain is heading towards its peak (scabs coming off the tonsils).  Just tell him that by day 12-14 it will be a distant memory.  I found that for eating if I could get some paracetamol down around 40 mins before I wanted to eat that worked well on my throat.  The rest I spread out evenly across the day so that there were no peaks and troughs in the pain relief.  From now on try to introduce more substance to the food and move away from shakes and soups, not that there is anything wrong with them it is just texture helps healing and gets the muscles working well.

The dissection is a walk in the park compared to tonsils (at least I found my 2 dissections so).  I guess he will be visiting the GP to get the closures taken out.  I had both staples and stitches.  Neither caused a problem being removed.  If he has any nerve issues after the dissection let us know we all have some good strategies to reduce the effects.

Hopefully the pathology will be good and there will be clear margins so no further treatment is needed.  Let us know how he get on.

  • Thank you so much Peter, I have just read out your reply to hubby.

He had a bad night last night but has just had some porridge and seems more comfortable this morning.

He is trying different foods and is trying to eat little and often.

Thank you for taking time to share your experience, it really does help.
