15/2/23 my first 3-month review appointment. It was a young doctor I hadn't met before - I've only seen my consultant twice. He said my PET scan was clear and I've had "complete response" to treatment. I know they don't say "cured" because there's quite a high chance of recurrence, but when pushed he said the tumour is gone - wonderful news. I'm so relieved! I'll try not to be anxious about recurrence, keep up my swallowing exercises and make sure to attend follow-up appointments. And plan a lovely holiday with my partner who has been such an amazing support through all this.
Thank you everyone for your support on here! It's been a really tough 6 months but I feel very lucky to have this outcome.
Love, Catriona

I know they don't say "cured" because there's quite a high chance of recurrence
The rate of recurrence is actually quite low Catriona, it's obviously sensible to be aware of the possibility but it's very much the exception rather than the rule in H&N patients.
Keep going to your checks and report anything that worries you for sure, but don't waste your life worrying about something that's probably not going to happen.
Have a great holiday!
Metastatic SCC diagnosed 8th October 2013. Modified radical neck dissection November, thirty-five radiotherapy fractions with 2xCisplatin chemo Jan/Feb 2014. Recurrence on larynx diagnosed July 2020 so salvage laryngectomy in September 2020.
Hi Alan I’m almost 5 years. I’m lucky I’ve never worried about reoccurrence s I trusted the team, the treatment and my fantastic oncologist. I did everything I could to help my self I learnt to listen to my body radiation fatigue is debilitating if you’re tired in recovery don’t fight it Take care you get enough hydration and nutrition even if it’s hard. Take a walk every day if you can snd go to every check up.
Dont waste time worrying about the what ifs concentrate on the here snd now. Head and neck cancers respond well to treatment we’re lucky do enjoy each day I do.
