Hi. Just had 10 month check up with ENT consultant. Manual examination of neck, thorough look in mouth & of course the lovely scope. All clear, next check up in 4 months. He told me that unfortunately not  all H&N patients go to their follow up checks if they feel well. I was rather stunned. I can’t imagine choosing to miss such important check ups.

  • That's great news, I can't imagine why people wouldn't go for their check ups. I always found them  very reassuring.

  • Well done Sian. Yes the non attendance is one concern of the clinicians involved in the PetNeck trial on PIFU.
    I was astounded.

  • Hi Sian, Neither  can I understand why. I’m the opposite I chase my appointments if I’ve not heard anything. I’m down to one ENT and one oncologist then I’m done. Time flies by, glad you are ok.

  • Hi Blod

Well done I am glad you are doing so well.

I wonder if the nonattendance at follow up appointments is because people want to forget what has happened and get on with things but it is a bit like putting your head in the sand. The same as those who will not go to the doctor when they have symptoms as they just don’t want to know and hope it will go away. I equate it to getting your car serviced regularly and getting any small issues sorted out early rather than leaving it and then having a huge job to fix.

I know after my first op I just wanted to get back to normal and get back to my life as it was pre cancer. For some including me that can be a pipe dream and a slightly different life happens but that doesn’t make it bad just different. Adjusting to life after cancer can be hard but sticking your head in the sand is definitely not a helpful approach. There is definitely still a very good life out there to be experienced and enjoyed.
