I have my post treatment 12 week MRI scan results at Sussex Cancer Centre on the 11th and I see Consultant ENT at Eastbourne on the 12th.  I am extremely anxious as I still cannot really eat and my throat is still 'uncomfortable'  Do I need to be worrying or is 12 weeks still early days????  I have lost 2.5 stone, no appetite but I do have cravings. Still can't swallow those!  Going to have a video/scan done by SALT team later on this month to see if there's a problem. She thinks it might be the flap that stops food going into your my lungs (can't remember it's name).  The RT was actually on the front of my throat, thecheaviest dose of RT, I have/had hyoparnygeal cancer in the Piroform Fossa.

I had the scan done on the 26/12 would they have contacted me if there was a problem?  Still got awful mouth issues that seem to change daily, very nauseous feelings with it at times!

Difficult week but praying for good news.  Happy New Year to to you.  Wishing you a continuing and speedy recovery.     X

  • Hi just take it ine day at a time you've done the hard part treatment worrying won’t change the scan result. I waited 18 weeks almist for my pet Ct scan my trust  didn’t scan any earlier than that so I was aware from day 1 how long after treatment I would be scanned. I decided i wasn’t  going to waste 18 weeks worrying. The 11 th will soon be here worrying won’t change anything. A few people have shown hot spots on scans and either wait to be rescanned or biopsies. we would love to say all will be ok but only a few more days to wait. Pop back on when youve got your results. Likewise a few have had issues swallowing it does take time some longer than others to regain normal swallow. Does epiglottis sound familiar that’s what stops food going into lungs.

  • It is draining not feeling like you are making any progress...my symptoms can even change within the day...morning nauseous... afternoon mucous. One consistent thing is throat pain while swallowing (although I am only 5 weeks post treatment) Good luck at your appointment on the 11th, I wish I had a fast forward button I could just press to get to week 12. It is a great community here to lift your spirits though :-) Karen

Your throat is going to be sore for quite a while. My cancer was at the base of my tongue, millimetres away from my epiglottis and from the piriform fossa so I understand how you are feeling. I used to have to double or triple swallow for quite a while.

I was still having a fair bit of pain at 12 weeks though I could push past it to eat so I had an MRI before the scheduled PET. That was clear thank heavens....the PET was a different story

As for appetite....I could happily go without food easily for six months. I just ate to keep myself alive. No joy in it whatsoever but slowly slowly my taste for food came back, swallowing became easier and life was better
