Big Milestone - End of RT

Yesterday Mr Aotearoa made it to the end of radiotherapy!  35/35 done and bell has been rung!  A poignant moment for all kinds of reasons.  The review was good, no sign of thrush, bloods all good except white cells are a little low, but nothing significant, so we are staying in our lockdown for the next couple of weeks.  There are some patches on his skin which need the Flamazine for a while longer, the rest is looking okay. He’s keeping up with Gelclair, mouthwash, salt and bicarb rinses, cleaning teeth after every meal.  Voice is coming and going, but nothing too much to worry about.  The thick mucous is a problem though.  He wakes up unable to breathe and he often feels sick with it, the steaming helps (with Olbas oil) and he’s been offered a nebuliser if he wants it. He’s lost 7-8kg, so not bad.  It’s going to be strange not having to get up at 6.15 every week day.

I’ve got him to do a chart to monitor his exercise count and his calorie and fluid intake (he’d fallen off the wagon for everything after several bad days in a row). That way he can see how much he needs to make up with Fortisip, which he drinks, and take extra water through the PEG with his oxycodone medication.  It’s still porridge, soups, scrambled eggs and cod fillet in plain sauce at the moment, but I think he’ll want to try other things as we move through this coming fortnight (fingers crossed).  We’re getting there but by God it’s hard, really hard, at times.

This place is so very helpful.  So much to read and learn, wonderful support, great advice, lots of things to try and somewhere for people to cry, vent or whatever they need to do.

Time to see if he's awake and can manage a cup of tea. Slight smile

  • Hi just keep doing what you’re doing. It can some days be 2 steps forward and one step back but keep plodding on. Well done on cod in sauce. Better than me on week 1 if recovery

  • Well, as you say, some days it’s steps backwards and that is today.  But not surprised.  Almost got caught out on our walk today and had to step it up coming back, but he made it, thank goodness.  Then when he was over that, we finally had late lunch.  The butternut squash and sage soup (bought) which last week was “Ooh, that was easy, you can buy that again!” turned into “OMG, my mouth’s on fire!!”  He’d taken the usual meds and stuff, so never can tell.  But, he insisted on getting it down him, even though it took half an hour or so….  I think the cod might be off the menu this week, but we’ll see.  Tomorrow’s another day – could be better, could be worse, but the way forward is to look toward more good days than bad.

He’s had to learn patience – something that doesn’t come naturally.  I have an oft repeated chant “right now, this minute, can’t wait” because that’s him.  Small steps before big strides.

  • Hi sadly that’s a common theme. My hubby put  2 stone on after my treatment. He’s a Yorkshire lad so didn’t like waste he ate my leftovers. It’s annoying and expensive one week I could happily eat something only ti be repeated a few days or a week later into no way could I eat it.people couldn’t believe how sensitive my mouth was and in some cases still is. I can tell if something is changed by a supermarket in ingredient’s strange but true.
glad you made it back from walk. Baby steps or strides you will both get there.
