Hi Everyone,
All my pre treatment bits done, just waiting for my first RT next Thursday 3rd. A little bit apprehensive and I'm not good at waiting, so thought I'd pop in here to 'ramble' at you lovely people I don't have anyone to talk 'at', so I hope you don't mind.
I was hoping to make the most of the time left to have some tasty food before I can't. However, the hygienist was a bit rough and my teeth are so sensitive now, it's hard to enjoy anything. Sods law I guess , or a mild taste of whats to come ! I am using the high fluoride toothpaste and it is starting to ease a bit. Funny thing is, I don't really feel like eating anyway, you know when you just don't fancy anything!
My tattooed dot has turned into a splodge because I bled so much (warfarin). Might just be partially bruising? Hope it isn't going to be a problem, they seem keen to start treatment. The hospital rang yesterday because they were possibly going to fit a PEG, but the lady that does it is on leave and they didn't want to delay my start. So, it will be NG if needed.
I've had to use up my excess annual leave, so I have a bit of leisure time before it all starts proper. I've spent loads trying to make things more comfortable...New sofa, TV in bedroom, microwave etc. Have to stop now! Just a few bits to get, like soft toothbrush, mouthwash etc but no more household items!
It still doesn't feel like it's happening to me, so I'm calmer than my work mates expect me to be...not sure if that's good or bad
Anyway, best go and forage for something to eat. Thanks for listening x
Hi Lindy calm is good so is frantic just go with what you ferl at any moment. I had n g tube fitted towards end if week 3 just go with the flow. I got pleasure in double chocolate magnums on the weeks leading up to treatment kicking off.
choose sone good box sets to watch and chill. As for tattoo splodge am sure radiotherapy team will work round you. Worst scenario it will take a few moments longer to line you up.
Try ti keep calorie intake up soup with cream added. Eggs are good.
Soft toothbrush I used curaprox from Amazon if that helps many manage with electric ones I couldn’t.

Hi Lindy. Welcome to our community
It’s all a bit overwhelming isn’t it ?
In my experience my NG tube was easy to manage and when I didn’t need it any more I took it out in the bathroom and threw it in the bin. Don’t worry too much about putting weight on before your treatment. If you use your feeding tube properly and be sensible you shouldn’t lose much weight
I lost of my few pounds after treatment end when I was out of the clutches of my dieticians. Even then it wasn’t much.
As for your dot it shouldn’t make any difference. The lasers used to line you up will make the correction.
Stick around. There are lots of people ti share and give you a hand as you journey on.
Best wishes
Dani

Thanks Hazel, its weird being told by the medical profession not to lose weight, when they've been saying the opposite for ever...loving the thought of Magnums mind!
I've got lots of stuff recorded that I've been saving. As well as Prime and Disney +
I'll have a look on amazon, thanks. I asked dentist at hospital today....he specialises in cancer patients...he said not to worry too much and to use a mouthwash. Not sure I like the sound of an electric toothbrush.
Thank you x
Hi Dani,
It's just all moving so fast...which is a good thing in many ways. I've not had too much time to dwell on things.
I was worried about the NG tube which is probably why my nurse put me down for a PEG. She has reassured me though, so I feel OK about it now.
I have enough weight on me to be able to afford to lose a bit anyway, so not too worried about that.
I asked the nurse to tattoo a bunny, she said pretend it's a tiny one...maybe she got carried away hahaha.
Thanks Dani x
Hi. Yes for it’s strange after treatment a good year after it was all about sufficient calories. It was a case if picking up things and reading calories if not enough putting them back. I always remember marks and spencer fruit tea cake was 296 calories add butter when toasted with cheese on top 500 calories snack cut in quarters and nibble to the crustA whole new way if shooing. Then around 15 month it was back to watching what I ate.
You need the calories for recovery we tend to poise muscle mass do protein plays a big part.
But as we know we are all different.
. But more if that later. Mouthwash be careful you need alcohol free ones I still use bioxtra on prescription.
Don’t overthink anythjng it will all fall into place.

Hazel... Bit of an extreme way to lose weight, I'll be the odd one that puts it on knowing my luck! Hehe
I don't eat meat, so protein will be my challenge!
Dentist recommended Cordysyl, I said that one stings now....'yes it will" he said! Im sure I've seen they do an alcohol free one though! He said the hospital will give me everything I need. Guess I'll find out on Thursday next week. I'll make a note of bioextra and ask them.
I do tend to overthink ...keep me right

Hi You can get pea protein powders for smoothies etc. the ensure drinks that’s you out into ng tubes ir drink have protein in them the protein helps build muscles etc. Are you vegetarian or vegan you will need to speak to dieticians I have been over last 4 years in touch with a few vegetarians quite a few to aid recovery started eating meat but of course it’s your choice. Dani from memory used corsodyl thunk it was a case if gritted teeth some times. Yes the hospital will give you your medication you will have more than boots chemist by time you finish.
Overthinking won’t help you just take each day as it comes stay chilled if you can

Corsodyl is actually pretty good for killing nasty mouth bugs. When you’re in treatment it’s easy to not keep your mouth clean. In fact I’d say it’s impossible. I managed to keep brushing but it was hard. I simply used an electric toothbrush within a gentle head. I used Corsodyl alcohol free last thing at night. It stung like hell for 10 seconds but it did the trick. I didn’t get thrush and my gums stayed healthy.
You will likely get Difflam which helps anaesthetise your mouth as well as be bactericidal and Gelclair which helps protect your mouth.

Hi Hazel, I do always keep protein powder in to top myself up, usually a vegan one because I don't tolerate dairy too well in quantity. I just don't like meat, its a texture thing more than anything. I wouldn't freak out if I accidentally ate some.
I'm being more 'dog' as in living in the moment. Doing quite well at not thinking too far ahead.

Thanks Dani,
There are so many products out there, dentist also recommended Caphosol. I looked it up, it's very expensive and complicated. I'll see what they give me next week and take it from there. Good to know what has worked for others though.
