Hi. I have appointment to see consultant next week for PET CT & MRI results. I had PET CT nearly 4 weeks ago & MRI last week. I am getting more & more anxious & scared about the results.
I had bilateral tonsillectomy in Jan, a PEG fitted in Feb & finished 6 weeks of chemo & radio in April for tonsil & lymph node HPV 16 cancer.
This group has been a fantastic resource & support. I felt cut adrift once treatment ended but then discovered this forum & found it so helpful to read everyone’s experiences & advice.
How do you all deal with the anxiety & underlying fear that precedes the scan results appointment? I feel physically sick thinking about it & unable to just get on with everyday tasks etc.
Thanks for any advice.
Hi Blod. I just focussed on what my oncologist said he said he would cure me. I was HPV positive and it’s extreme rare that these cancers do nit respond to the chemo radiation. To be honest personally I had no doubts. I had already been in contact with a couple of people who had still shown hot spots after treatment and they had successfully come through that one the next scan was clear and the other needed a small,op to remove a lymph node am still in touch with them and one has just celebrated 5 years and 1 is 6 years post treatment. Your trust in your team has got you this far only a few days more until you see him/ her..Please don’t stress it won’t help youve come this far

Hi Blod,
Hard as it may be try and get on with life normally. We all know how you feel at the moment. The mind thinks the worst when often there is nothing to worry about. I would suggest that as they are taking their time with the PET results then there is probably nothing to worry about. Normally your consultant will have the PET results in a few days so if there was concern then I am sure they would have called you in much earlier.
Your scans are quite early post treatment so be prepared for a few uncertainties at the consultation as some of the effects of treatment may be still showing on the scans. That does not mean cancer; it is just the body healing. I had my scan done at 6 months, you're only at just over 2.
Hi my pet ct scan was 18 weeks like Peter says your scan is early when did you finish in April ?

Hi Blod. No amount of reassurance is going to convince somebody who is anxious nevertheless I’ll add my bit.
I wasn’t anxious just convinced I was going to die of this cancer so I did a lot of research. I understand the medical jargon and the science behind it.
When my oncologist went through my consent form for RADICAL radiotherapy he said it meant that he could cure me. Nothing is guaranteed but this cancer has an excellent response to treatment, much more so than many others. The trade off is that this treatment is aggressive and painful.
I assuaged my fear if the results by understanding what a good chance I had. No matter what the doctors say, the science is solid. Treatment failure is extremely rare.
I won’t talk about trust either because who/what can you trust? At times you can’t even trust your body.
Try to avoid whataboutery. Keep busy, busy enough so that you concentrate on something else; physical is good.
Next week and tomorrow always come and become yesterday. Deep breath and a little faith in yourself.
The next bit of advice may not set well but leave cancer behind for a while. Lock yourself away from the Macmillan Community or any other cancer platform till you get your results.
Good luck
