Hi Everyone,

Quick update tomorrow 31 August it will be 3 years since my last radiotherapy session. So 2 more years and I will be the magic 5 years. Yes it’s only a number but gives hope and encouragement to anyone starting out.
What’s happened in these 3 years, We’ve made lots of new friends online through this  forum and my blog. This year  I met up  with quite a few as well which was great.
Managed 49 weeks in Spain riding our bikes and living our lives.Plus 7 uk holidays, so that’s pretty good.I’ve also seen our step granddaughter get married and  have another baby. Our grandson in his last year at junior school. I’ve got to spend quality time with John my long  suffering husband.
Who I’m sure no longer listens to me saying I’ve got dry mouth !
So I would like to say thank you to Leeds cancer centre and  the NHS for giving me the opportunity to do all the above.
Thank  you to everyone on here for passing their words of wisdom on , and putting up with my famous typing errors.
At 3 years I can eat most things except spicy chillies curry’s etc.
For me personally alcohol is a no no but I think I am the exception to the rule. Didn’t drink much before so no loss to me.
Dry mouth at night and very occasionally during the day but nothing that I can’t deal with.
So everyone starting out or on  treatment take  heart, things can continue to improve well past the 1-2 year mark.

One additional thing I along with  run s what app grouo and recently have had a discussion about Cognitive impairment after radiotherapy I touch wood am fine but out if 8 of us 6 are experiencing a late radiotherapy comorbidity. This is  coming across as n impairment of attention , thinking, short  term memory loss and forgetting simple words that link sentences. Just bringing it tj peoples attention it’s not chemo brain as several didn’t have chemo. It is a known link

remember there’s a long list of side effects we won’t get them all.
What I thjnk helps me is I do daily puzzles, crosswords, suduko and am always crocheting bot knitting which involves patterns  ie brain working

As we all know cancer can be life changing and life limiting like we all say we are all different . Our motto pre cancer was One life live it and we still live by this motto.

Onwards and upwards to infinity and beyond.

Hugs to everyone

Hazel xx

  • Congratulations on getting to the 3 year mark Hazel. Great to see you making the most of it all too. Thank you for your support and advice, it makes this path so much easier to navigate!

Here's to many more years living the life!

    Take care, Ronnie x

  • Well done  Hazel, it's good for these milestones to be noted, I'm sure it inspires those who are not so far along the way. All the best

    Regards Ray.

  • Hi Hazel

That's a great milestone to mark.  You are doing remarkably well, and many of the things you do and say are an example to those that follow along the H&N cancer pathway.

Keep on rushing towards the 5 year mark and then onwards to 10 years!

  • I’m chasing you, Hazel

My life’s not as exciting as yours. The small holding keeps me busy at home but thus weekend I have helped my oldest step celebrate her 40th birthday with a two day bash and discovered that Honey Jack Daniels is actually rather nice.
Life after treatment is a million times better than we ever imagine it could be

  • I am a 61 year old woman who is teacher, proud mum, keen horse rider, knitter, and a yoga enthusiast. 7 weeks ago I discovered a lump on my neck. Since then I have had scans, biopsies etc and eventually I was diagnosed with HPV16+ tonsil cancer. It has all been so quick, the NHS has been wonderful. I have my appointment tomorrow with the oncologist and am hoping that will be when I find out more including what my treatment plan will be. All of this has made me wobbly but hearing how positive you all are gives me hope.  x
