I have recently being diagnosed with Parotid saliva duct cancer I’m 82 and have been offered ADT therapy (Testosterone) suppressant or surgery by removing the growth from the duct and rebuilding my face by taking a flap from my arm, also removing the lymph glands in my neck a long 8-9 hour operation and 7-10 days in hospital but it will get rid of the  cancer. The ADT therapy will only stop the cancer but it will remain.
Has anyone had ATD therapy and if so what side effects did you suffer and were they manageable. I’m not sure to have the surgery or the ADT therapy.

  • Hi

That must be a very difficult choice.
i have been here for nearly eight years and i cant recall anybody having ADT.
It is a recognised treatment fir prostate cancer so maybe you could ask about side effects on the prostate group here

  • Hi Dani, Thank you for the reply, from what I’ve read ADT is mainly given for prostrate cancer but because Saliva duct  cancer has the same receptors as prostrate it can be given  but I can’t find any cases of saliva duct cancer in the forums where ADT has been given.  I have until this Wednesday 30th September when I have an appointment with the surgeons, I don’t like the idea of the ADT side effects but also I don’t like the sound of operation, I’m in a dilemma.

  • Hi again. I didn’t find anything either.
im not surprised you are in a dilemma. What sort of guidance did you get from both your surgeon and your oncologist?

Will the surgeon spare your facial nerve?

It seems such a terrible decision to make. The side effects can be profound. I can ask on the prostate cancer forum for you.

  • Hi Dani

I would appreciate it if you could find out what side effects from ADT.

    thanks

  • The surgeon just offered surgery or ADT but they did explain the bad side effects. They didn’t say about the facial nerve, but I would hope they will preserve it.

  • I would appreciate it if you could find out what side effects from ADT.

I'll see what I can do from another forum member I know who lives with prostate cancer

They didn’t say about the facial nerve,

    You need to know this

  • Hello

The side effects from ADT vary - some we all get others don't get many/any but the main ones are:

Fatigue - you need to keep as fit as possible.

Hot Flushes - mine are controlled by taking Sage Tablets,

    Erectile dysfunction - ah well!

Bone Thinning - add calcium and vitamin D tablets to your diet.

Moobs - you can grow a pair of breasts, there's medication to stop this.

Diabetes - the medication can lead to increased blood sugars.

    Itchy Skin - moisturuser.

As with any medication your team will ensure there's no medication clash with anything you are taking at the time.

    Best wishes - Brian.
