Hello. I’ve posted once before but mainly just scrolling and finding inspiration in others experience. In my 9th week post radiation treatment. Had 6 week check with nurse practitioner who reassured me healing was going as expected although I was worried about an area where tonsil was removed - it felt rough and swollen as did tongue on same side. It’s improved a bit but still aware of it. Next review with consultant in 2 weeks. PET scan will be at 18 weeks. It was a rough treatment at times but it was head down and keep going. Taste slowly recovering, no real pain now except when a food sets off some stinging. Managed Christmas ok. No real appetite or interest in food but eat I must. Just want to get on other side of PET scan now to see road ahead. Wishing everyone the best happiest New Year possible.

Hi Caro and welcome from me.
Your time frame of recovery following treatment and relationship with food and eating, is very familiar to me, and probably many others on these boards. I finished my treatment for very similar (tonsils and lymph nodes) last Jan and isn't it great after weeks of eating being a real chore that must be endured, painful and tasteless, to being able to taste again and then being able to eat relatively pain free?
To me these were the first real signs that I was on the road to recovery.
I was able to eat a variety of tasty soft foods by week 10, as long as I hand a glass of water to hand. Enough so that I was able to return to part time work around that time, which was great after weeks in bed and on the sofa.
Happy to see that you are on a similar recovery trajectory and hope this continues for you.

Hi Micky
Thank you for your reply. Yes it’s good to be able to eat most food again and although the taste is not as good as I would like I am hopeful of improvement. It is great being able to eat out with friends without worrying about menu choices etc. and is another sign of a return to some sort of normality. It is early days for me yet but trying to be positive and keep worry at bay.
Keep well

The area where my tonsil had been removed used to worry me too but I was always reassured that it was healing well. What worried me was that it felt like it did before I had the op. Kind’ve rough against the edge of my tongue. This persisted for a long time but I’m happy to say that 5 years on it now feels fine. The area still gets sore from time to time but a few days of gargling with salt water always sorts it out. It’s now quite rare for it to feel anything other than normal.
