“Hello, I’m due to have a right postero-lateral oral tongue excision — about a 2p-sized area, roughly 1 cm deep (shallow partial glossectomy).
I haven’t had surgery yet and would really value hearing from others who’ve had lateral oral tongue surgery, particularly about what to expect with speech, eating, pain, and recovery in the early weeks.
Im so scared of what to expect! Anyone know this type.

Hi Sue? Are you having a reconstruction?
My old neighbour had a similar op without a flap and healed perfectly ok. I think she was just in soft food and pain killers for a little while.
I can hear her talk with a slight lisp but that’s all
Have a look at

While there are a few glossectomy patients here Young Tongues is much more active.
Good luck with your surgery

Hi Sue. I had a partial Glossectomy 5 years ago. It's normal to be apprehensive about upcoming surgery. Everyone is different but expect to have some discomfort and a numbness for a few weeks after. Have you had a feeding tube in yet?
Mine was more extensive surgery but my advice is speaking to your team. Get decent pain meds prescribed also. This is a routine surgery for these guys and you are in good hands I assure you. It's difficult to predict after effects as my neck dissection and partial Glossectomy took 13 hours and left me in alot of discomfort. You should fare better but please try and relax, the surgeons know what they are doing, they do it everyday. Take care, hope I've helped a bit at least. Keep talking, knowledge is power. Wayne
Thanks so much. Im not having neck dissection with first surgery until results. Biopsy was mid to poor grade but mri showed no lymph. They said feeding tube on waking but maybe removed and home next day!! Very poor service
nasal intubation
I had that when I had my panendoscopy. You won’t feel that. They give you a squirt of local up your nose then your induction anaesthetic and you’re out cold.
Just make sure they send you home with lots of pain killer and if you’re on cocodomol you’ll need laxatives as well.
Try to chill. Your anaesthetist will put you at ease and you’ll be back in recovery in a trice

feeding tube on waking
And I had that too. You won’t feel it and it’s easy to take out when you go home.
