Hello I am a 61 yr old lady and waiting to start treatment for cancer on my left tonsil. I’m due to have some wisdom Teeth out and a PEG fitted. Treatment was due to start on the 26th but this may change due to fitting me in for teeth. I have read many of your blogs and I am so glad you are all there. I am so scared of the painful side effects, my anxiety is already through the roof and I need to try and calm myself down. If any of you have any tips or encouragement to get me through this I would be so grateful. Thank you
Hi there Delaney.
I'm my bloke's carer and as he can't speak, I did all the talking for him throughout his six weeks RT.
Any signs of discomfort he relayed to me, I told his Radiographers straight away. They were brilliant and nothing was too much trouble for them. They gave us creams for his neck to counter soreness and as many bottles of sodium chloride irrigation, to keep ulcers at bay, as he needed. We didn't have to buy anything and the preparations worked a treat. Put your trust in them and your team to help you through.
It seems like yesterday when H started treatment and he's almost six weeks post already! Time flies, etc.
We christened his mask Noodles and he perches proudly in our back bedroom.
All the very best to you my lovely and you're definitely in the right place here. There's always someone to give brilliant advice and tips from their own experiences which is an absolute boon when feeling unsure.
Gill xx
I hope your meeting on Wednesday goes really well and I will be thinking of you. The mind does play tricks and it’s hard not to stress or panic. I’m anxious and haven’t even started treatment. You have done brilliantly, you are very brave. I am being treated in Oxford. Everyone I have met so far are nice and reassuring. Do take care Nige
Hello Gill, thank you for your reply. I will keep all of your advice and others on this forum. Your husband is so brave and so are you Gill. I am going to christen my mask- Micky mentioned he did that too. Everyone on this forum are amazing and I pray I can be as brave. I wish your husband a speedy recovery and il keep checking to see how he is getting on. So many wonderful people on here, I’m starting to feel less anxious.
best wishes xxx
Thanks Micky, you are right to say all advice gives strength in knowing what will happen but I’m still nervous. I hope I’m as brave as all of you. I just need to get these teeth sorted and not left with numbness and dribbling due to roots being entwined with the nerves. Surgeons saying low risk on one side now but not other. This will put starting date back which, as much as I’m scared I want to start. Sorry I’m going on xxxx
