Just been told today that I have squamous cell cancer in the base of my tongue.
I'm still in shock as its been 4-5 weeks of testing.
I am told this is very treatable as its in one place and not spread so far.
the next stage is to see if I need any teeth taken out.
this scares me as I have always had good teeth.
has anyone been through this without teeth taken out?
also I'm told to eat lots of fat foods before and during treatment
I am already slim and eat healthy, so scared that I will waste away. any tips or advise would be gratefully received?
thanks you
Stephen
p.s I feel lucky to have found this site as it seems any people have got through this.
thank you Debbie, I will keep re-reading this as it gives me hope.
Forgot to say hospital essentials for me were:
earplugs ( I prefer silicone screw in ones on amazon3.99 for 8 colourful pairs)
my own soft pillow and son’s fleece blanket
pjs dressing gown bed socks and slippers
ipad phone and charger
Hope it goes well
Debbie
Hi All,
got a question -
my tumour was found due to ear pain.
my tumour is on the right side of the base of my tongue - inside the tongue. im told that the nerves to the ear run through this. has anyone else had this issue and did the ear pain go away once the tumour was gone?
p.s I also get slight jaw pain on this side too.
thanks
Stephen
did the ear pain go away once the tumour was gone?
Hi Stephen My oncologist told me that any pain associated with the cancer would go as soon as it started shrinking.

Base of tongue cancer. T2N0M0 6 weeks Radiotherapy finished January 2019
Didn’t have any ear pain, but after surgery to remove tumour at the back of my tongue, my ear on that side went completely numb. Now it makes more sense. Damage to the same nerves giving you the pain. Numbness has pretty much sorted itself out now.

Hi my husband has tonsil cancer. He was told by dietitian not to to worry about healthy eating. Eat everything full fat, milk, butter, cheese, rice pudding, custard etc, ti account for the weight you might loose during treatment. I’ve been telling him this past year to loose some weight, now I’m making him eat everything in sight x
