Hi all; just a quick question. I finished RT on Friday Yippee. There are a number of ongoing changes that I am working through and hopefully getting the upper hand on. The one that has crept up on me recently and when I say crept on on, I really mean knocked me sideways - My neck.
My Neck is in a terrible state and although I have been given Flamigel and more recently Flaminal, I neck is raw and am still secreting heavily through my skin. Is there anything else that I could use that would expedite the healing process, or is another case it will improve in time?
All suggestions will be gratefully received
Thanks
John
John my radiologist gave me Polymem bandages and they were brilliant and really helped with the blisters etc. speak to your Radiologist or doctor as they are new but excellent.

I have just finished my 6 chemotherapy and 30 radiotherapy for tonsil and throat cancer. I have PEG and currently have to take all nutrition through it.
I am struggling to open my throat to swallow even sips of water. Does anyone have any tips as my gag reflex is high and really struggling.

Hi Dave
When you say ‘just’ finished your treatment, I’m guessing it’s within the last week or two? I wouldn’t panic. I was tube dependent for at least 6 weeks after treatment. My main issue with liquids was that instead of going down, they wanted to go up behind my nose which was highly unpleasant. Water was one of the worst offenders….it took me a long time to be able to drink it. My go to when I first started being able to drink was cappuccino. Counter intuitively I found larger gulps were easier than small sips.
Maybe have a chat to your speech and language person? Mine gave me some thickener (tasteless) to make swallowing water easier. You can achieve any consistency from just a bit thicker than water to something more akin to wallpaper paste. Sounds ghastly but it helped.
Good luck
Liz
Hi Dave
My experience was similar to yours and Liz's. I worked with my speech therapist and daily mouth and swallowing exercises really helped! It also helped having a swallow test to see how things went down when I swallowed. It took maybe 4 months to transition to full oral eating and being able to stabilize my weight to feel comfortable having the PEG removed. It takes time and perseverance. Hang in there and YAY cappuccinos!
Hi I burnt and was using polymem bandages in week 5 they really do work. Trick is to leave them in until green gunk comes through to the outside sleep in them only take off for shower.
