Hi , happy new year to one and all.

unfortunately I am once again starting out on the long road of tests etc . Had a persistent cough since late summer and following excellent work from my doctor had xray and CT Scan . On New Year’s Eve I got the news which I had been suspecting , looks like three tumours right lungs and several others various places . My question is simply anyone else had lung cancer following tonsil / lymph cancer . I can remember reading that tonsil cancer can spread to chest.

  • Hi Brian.
Sorry to read that you are in trouble.
I guess you have to wait for biopsies to see whether you have spread or a primary lung cancer.
It’s a sad fact that some throat cancers spread very early in their natural history and there are tiny metastases in the lungs on first presentation.
But all is not lost. There have been some remarkable results with immunotherapy

We have a forum member who is stable after two years Pembrolizumab

Click on his name. At the bottom of his profile he has a link to his blog

Best of luck. Let us know how you get on

  • Hi Brian, as  mentioned below, I was diagnosed with HPV-related tonsil cancer in 2020, which in 2021 was detected in 6 tumours across both lungs. I was given a pretty short terminal diagnosis. At first they thought it was related to a new primary, but biomarker tests showed that it was similar to tonsil tumour found previously. (I also got further scans when I had developed a persistent cough). I was assessed for immunotherapy drug Pembrolizumab, and luckily was responsive to the drug. I was on it for 2 years then taken off it at end of 2023. Currently I have no visible signs of disease, but am still being scanned regularly.

    I've blogged about it, e.g. see https://ansmackay.wixsite.com/uclgeography/post/here-we-go-again

Happy to chat directly about any concerns you may have, next steps etc. The Stage 4 club is not the best membership in town (!), but outcomes are also more nuanced than they might at first appear. Cheers, Ans
