I finished treatment for HPV16-positive cancer in May 2023, which had affected two lymph nodes in my neck, primary was never found. A PET scan in August 2023 showed no signs of active cancer.
On December 6, I underwent an ultrasound for what I believed was a hernia, followed by a CT scan on December 9. The results revealed abdominal and pelvic lymphadenopathy, with a mass in the right iliac fossa corresponding to lymph node enlargement (7 cm).
The possible diagnoses listed were lymphoma or metastatic disease related to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). There were no signs of cancer anywhere else.
I recently had another PET scan and am scheduled for a biopsy. I am naturally more concerned about the possibility rather than metastatic cancer, than lymphoma. it would be unusual for SCC to bypass typical metastatic pathways and affect lymph nodes in the groin. However it appears that it might be the case.
things always move slower at christmas ....I went thru the same ....I had a "christmas cancer" .. maybe they don't have all the information yet and will gather and have definite info for you when it all comes together...try calling the office tomorrow ...Monday and say you are concerned because you have heard nothing...My dad would have said "no news is good news" but the wait is always the worst ... but boy it moves fast once that ball is rolling all the best ...thinking of you
I'VEve been given an appointment with my head and neck oncologist for the 14th of January to discuss my biopsy results. I couldn’t wait, knowing the results were back, so I called to confirm the basics. I was told that the biopsy has confirmed it is not lymphoma. This was surprising, as my doctor himself was shocked it wasn’t lymphoma. He mentioned that further markers have been requested from the biopsy.
He explained that he has never seen a recurrence of HPV-related squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) like this before. I made a remark, saying, “Well, that’s that then; it’s just a matter of how long I have with my family now.” To which he replied, “Wesley, it’s not that straightforward. We need more results from the additional biopsy tests.”
He went on to say that while normal metastatic SCC is usually incurable—because it typically spreads to the bones and organs—mine hasn’t done that. It’s still located within the lymphatic system.
I’m not sure if this is meant to give me more hope or not. It’s been such a strange and uncertain situation.
