I have just joined. I’ve had head neck cancer in January, I had surgery and then I had radiation in June. I have a lot of swelling in my mouth still, and. my speech is getting better, but I don’t understand why I still have this swollen. I guess you can call it in my mouth. This was caused from my radiation because I didn’t have this before does anybody else have this problem?

    Hi

I finished chemoradio for T2N1M0 Tonsil cancer in June 2023, swelling and inflammation of mouth and throat area persisted for months afterwards, goes with the territory for most of us.

Difflam/benzydamine HCL spray helped alongside regular hydration, things do improve, takes time.

  • Thank you !! I got those lozenges from Amazon and I thought that would be something to try because my mouth is so dry. I have to play water everywhere.

17 months post treatment and water is still my constant companion, dry mouth is a fact of life now.

I have a Guinness alcohol free most days as I find it helps with the dry mouth, and I really enjoy it, some days the dry mouth is not so bad, some foods are maybe triggers.

  • Try chewing gum.  That works for me when I am out and about and don't want to carry a bottle of water.  Go for the sugar free and find a taste that works for you.

  • Another fan of chewing gum here.
Also acupuncture. There are a couple of entries in my blog linked at the bottom of this post

Are you doing swallow and jaw exercises a couple of times a day? That helps with swelling. I still do mine five years later.

  • Unfortunately the dreaded dry mouth is par for the course. It is 5 years since my last radiotherapy and I still have a dry mouth. I find Oral7 moisturising gel helps quite a lot. Put a dab on your tongue and it makes a difference although it needs re-applying after a while. The moisturising spray helps short term and I carry some in my bag with me when I go out.
