Hi, I have tongue and gum cancer. Has anyone had it inside their upper lip area inside mouth - squamous carcinoma.m and what was done? Just terrified now

I had to wear hearing aids and they told me that I would probably be rendered deaf after the chemotherapy and 30 rounds of radiotherapy. I know longer have to wear hearing aids so at least something positive has happened and the ENT surgeon has never heard of this before. Just keep positive.
regards Dave
I have just finished my 6 chemotherapy and 30 radiotherapy for tonsil and throat cancer. I have PEG and currently have to take all nutrition through it.
I am struggling to open my throat to swallow even sips of water. Does anyone have any tips as my gag reflex is high and really struggling.

Hi Kos
Hi Kos
I have intermittent tinnitus in both ears (after 35 Rounds of chemo and 2 overnight chemos)like a low buzz sometimes abit white noise. It seems to have got a bit better Im one year post treatment.Although there doesn’t seem to be a cure yet there are things that may help speak to your team about your own experience to see if they can .
Hearing aids. These may help some people with tinnitus who have hearing loss. Using a hearing aid helps make the sounds louder that you are having trouble hearing. This may reduce the tinnitus.
Cochlear implants. This option is for those who have tinnitus and severe hearing loss.
Maskers or sound generators. These provide help for some people by making tinnitus less noticeable. This small electronic device creates sound that may make the ringing or roaring seem softer.
Medicines. Some medicines may ease tinnitus by addressing a problem linked to the condition. Medicines may also improve mood or sleep.
Tinnitus retraining therapy. This therapy uses a combination of counseling and maskers. An ear, nose, and throat doctor (ENT or otolaryngologist) or a hearing specialist (audiologist) can help you learn how to deal with the tinnitus
Counselling. You may find it helpful to meet with a counselor or support group Relaxation. This may provide relief as stress may make tinnitus worse.
Hi DaveB5246
Well done for getting through treatment I couldn’t sip water for my last few weeks and was totally relient on my PIG ( feeding tube)Many of us struggle to swallow /drink/eat straight after treatment Dont be suprised if things feel worse for the next 4-12 weeks ( we are all different . Your poor throat tonsils and body etc have been blasted with chemoradiation and it all takes it toll).
Keep up with the exercises from your Speech and Language team ( I still do them 4x every day ) Keep trying when you can.. keep swallowing even if it means using throat spray or mouthwash Difflam/Benzadamine which can help numb throat and mouth( ask your Oncologist/team). Also keep on top of oral care clean teeth even if you have to use soft brush use mouthwash and mouth sprays gels provided by your team.
Dont lose hope things will improve slowly but surely
Debbie

Hi how did you manage mentally in front of your family? No treatment yet but I feel like a junkie taking this and that. I’m 69 next month so at least I’m not young, have to look at the silver linings! Sorry to keep going on but people on here will understand how I feel. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Hi how did you manage mentally in front of your family?
Not Lyn but I’m sure she will be back to you when Australia wakes up.
For me I understood that cancer is really serious and there was no hiding I would be at the mercy of treatment. I accepted that and trusted my oncologist’s words that he was aiming to cure me. I didn’t pretend I was ok because I wasn’t.
I fell into my husband’s arms and let him hold me. He did a good job.
