Hi, I have just been diagnosed with throat cancer, the consultant told me it is on my vocal cords and is pretty confident that he can remove most of it with surgery and then radiotherapy to get the remainder. Can anyone please help me to understand what I am going to experience?

  • Hi   I hope Paul doesn’t mind but I’ll tag him as he’s just finished just this

  • Thank you, I really need as much info on this as possible to enable me to prepare for the fight

  • How much info have you had from your consultants? Have you any dates for starting treatment?

  • I have a pre op appointment on the 17th so hopefully surgery soon after

  • Take pen and paper in with you, or even record the session in your phone. Take somebody with you to hear things you miss. I took my husband and between us we managed to get everything understood. Ask if you don’t. Make sure they explain everything to you.
You can make a list of questions before you go in. Things to ask in no particular order. How long will recovery from surgery be? Will I be in hospital and for how long? What about pain relief? Will be able to eat/speak?
When will I start radiotherapy and how l many sessions will I have?
That will do for a start.
Once a plan is in place it really does become easier, though the treatment is a real challenge.
