Hi.

My FIL has been diagnosed with stage 4 head and neck cancer.

We feel like our world has imploded and feel very confused and lost. He is having chemo and radio for 7 weeks, PEG tube fitted and teeth removed.

we have been told that he will be having even more scans to see if it’s travelled elsewhere too. He’s young, a non smoker and non drinker and this has curve balled us all.

Can someone be honest with me and tell me what I’m expecting here as you hear stage 4 and think the worst. He has a young grandchild to live for!

any advice or information would be gratefully received as I’m feeling very much in the dark.

Thanks

  • Hi CESM Really sorry to hear this , No one can really answer that question except an oncologist. You FIL is in the hands of the experts now and please God they will be able to help . All the Best Minmax

  • Hi CESM. Sorry to hear about your FIL and yes, it sure is like a curveball for many of us. As you'll know, no two people are the same, and prognoses are difficult for the professionals never mind us. If you're interested in reading my experience you can click on the little armchair by my name. But please keep in mind that whilst many of us have similar experiences, some people have less side effects, some more, and what was problematic for me, may be a breeze for someone else. We're all in this together, Tina x

  • Hello CESM, I'm really sorry to hear this, it will have been a huge shock for you all. The waiting and uncertainty is the worst - once you have a full diagnosis and treatment plan, you know where you are and just get on with it. If his cancer turns out to be HPV related, it's likely to be very responsive to treatment - I'm living proof that it works. Mine was T4 but had not spread beyond the lymph nodes in my neck.

Do keep in touch on here, it's a brilliant forum for advice & support.  Wishing you all luck and strength

  • Hi

so sorry to read your post. You must all indeed be in some turmoil

With your father in law’s history the likely cause is HPV which carries an excellent prognosis even at stage 4 if it’s still localised to his head  and neck so fingers crossed the scans are clear.
Do have a look at petlamb’s profile for a sense of how his treatment will go

There is a forum member here going through treatment who posts every day so it’ might be a good idea to keep a track on his progress too

     1st one done..

  • Hi. it’s likely that your father-in-law‘s neck cancer is HPV derived. Is that a question that you can ask the oncologist HPV driven tumours respond extremely well to treatment. My blog detail below will show you what I went through. I’m now just over five years, post treatments. Don’t dwell on what the stage says we all react differently. I’ve got quite a lot of friends

who were also T4  for head and neck cancer and happily living their lives di please don’t dwell on the staging. Our cancers Have excellent responses in many cases.

there’s a lot of us on here thst can testify to that.
Keep iff sr google stick with us

I was 61 and  fit and healthy prior to diagnosis as well many of us are that are HPV driven tumours
