About 5 weeks ago I was diagnosed, MRI CT scans followed and a start date for Radio and Chemo of the 10th July, PEXACT tube fitted 2 days ago, ouch, there was an anomaly in my right of concern following a PET scan the Right side indicated C in the Toncil so now in 4 days time the Toncil is coming out, Radio and Chemo will be delayed for at least 2 weeks.

the surgery rationale is it’s confirmed to the Toncil on the right so removing reduces the Radiation doses and the side effects , although they did say the surgery is No pleasant

how can I prepare myself for the Tonsil opp I guess plenty of pain killers soft foods and Icecream

  • Hi. Tonsillectomy is a bit ghastly in adults. Make sure the hospital give you plenty of decent painkillers. Expect to be in discomfort for a couple of weeks. I think they encourage you to eat proper food before discharge

  • Hi.I had both tonsils out before my treatment. It's not very pleasant but you can keep on top of the pain, as long as you take the painkillers regularly. They will want to see you eat something before you leave. It's good you have had a feeding tube fitted, many of us have found them to be lifesavers. Any questions just ask. All the best.

  • Cheers Ray yep not looking forward to it - evidently I’m in for a day patient. What pain killers should they give me , Will Paracetamol do or something stronger …. My brother said he just remembered lots of Icecream

  • If I remember rightly, they gave me paracetamol and ibuprofen, I think the ice cream days are long gone, unfortunately. Good luck for your op.

  • Will Paracetamol do or something stronger

  • Hello. I had bilateral tonsillectomy prior to 6 weeks chemoradiation.
Take the pain meds they give you on a regular schedule I used Panadol soluble as I couldn’t swallow the paracetamol tablets. They gave me Cocodamol but they made me feel v weird so I managed ( just about) with the Panadol.
I ate pureed baby fruit - apple & pear which I kept in the fridge to make it nice & cold. Lots of iced water. Day 6/7 was most painful for me. I thought it would never get better, but it did. I gradually ate ‘normal’ foods, well buttered crumpet, bits of toast, Muller rice pots…

  • I had my left tonsil removed on the 20/6.The hospital will give you stronger painkillers than you can buy.I was told to eat normal food straight away which was quite hard but if you take your painkillers at regular intervals it really helps and I was told to drink water constantly.Good luck

  • Hi there, I’m so sorry to hear of your diagnosis stay strong and believe in your medical team.  I was diagnosed with tonsil cancer T2N1 M0 in April.  I’ve had my tonsillectomy and start chemotherapy and radiotherapy tomorrow in fact to treat the cancer in my lymph node.  The surgery is vile, I’m not gonna lie.  They did warn me but yowza. No ice cream I’m afraid.  They discourage that due to the fat content; the fat causes mucus production which can overload you and you may feel like your choking.  Use ice pops to aid any pain.  Drink plenty of ice water to keep the area moist. Insofar as pain relief, in hospital they give you brufen, paracetamol and codeine, sometimes liquid morphine ( I did).  When you’re home recovering you’ll get good grade pain relief which will be brufen, paracetamol and codeine and I got a throat spray too.  You must try and eat properly.  It’s to ensure you maintain the muscle strength to masticate and also toast, which they recommend, keeps the ex- tonsil area clean and free from infection. It keeps the scabbing away.  It’s really hard work, it does hurt especially at around day 5/6 as you start to heal, but keep at it. It’ll be frustrating and you’ll be exhausted through coughing a bit maybe. Try not to sneeze, it smarts a bit.  My surgery was just about 6 weeks ago, and it’s all ok, eating normally but still healing, it can be stubborn in that it feels like you’ve something stuck in your throat.  Drink plenty of fluid all the time.  I found caffeine and high fruit acid content dried me out then it starts the coughing.  Everyone’s different so I hope you heal quickly. Once the hospital prescribed medication runs out, over the counter medication I used was Brufen and Solpadine Max soluable. These are codeine based so be very mindful. Just one codeine at night to gargle and swallow helped me enormously.

  • HimGood luck for tomorrow keep on top of pain relief and if on codeine or morphine remember laxido or movicol to keep yiu regular. Don’t look too far in advance I found one day at a time got me through it. Any questions just ask someone will always get back to,you.
