after effects of radiation on neck/facial swelling, memory, and cataracts

I wonder if anyone has experienced swelling of the neck and/or face during or after radiation. Frankly I have had bad dreams about getting my breath cut off even before my diagnosis. Feeling choked. Right now, still before treatment, I feel like my symptoms are worsening but maybe it is just worry? When I asked the surgeon a week ago, he said he thought my symptoms were valid. Anyway I also have had cataract surgery in one of my eyes. And am due for the other eye to be done part way through radiation. I'm guess I should cancel this appointment but my husband says to wait a bit. I wonder if radiation will make the cataract worse and/or if it will affect the new one put in last year which is some sort of plastic I'm guessing. Also, being 73, my memory is not what it used to be and I have been tested but apparently mine was normal at this time last year. I wonder if radiation or chemo will negatively affect my memory as it has my younger sister who has another kind of cancer, underwent chemo and is now stage 4. If no one has experience re these issues, it is OK as I see my radiologist on Thursday and have a special nurse navigator who is supposed to be my go-to person although it is a holiday weekend here in Canada so I won't call her just yet. Thanks for anyone's reply.

  • Hi there. Yes I understand your worries. I'm starting wk 4 tomorrow for hpv throat cancer I won't pretend it's easy but I've managed to get through 3 weeks of Radio/chemo you will have reasonable days then all of a sudden the pain goes to the next level. My throat and tongue are very sore now my eyes have become really dry and sore. Just take all the pain killers they give you..

Take care wishing you lots of strength

  • Hi finished radiotherapy last week and faced face swelling even now especially at night. The neck swelling started after my bilateral neck disection and still have it. Speak to your specialists who may recommend some exercises for you. My tongue is swollen too.
