Hi, My husband was diagnosed last year with head and neck cancer, they thought it was in tonsil bed so they took part tongue and tonsil bed. They said it was clear so said it was unknown primary and he would start chem/radiotherapy, before that he had to have some teeth out and peg fitted. After all that he started treatment in September for six weeks from week 3 everything seemed to happen, sore throat, dry mouth, neck breaking out it was awful to see him like that. When treatment finished the side effects got worse. Saw consultant once a month then in February he had pet scan which showed hot spots, beginning of March saw consultant who said he needed neck dissection, when we saw the consultant two weeks ago he said he had taken away lymph nodes and gland but said the treatment had  worked and he was cancer free!!! We were over the moon but he still has all the side effects, tired all the while but consultant says it might be thyroid as radio might have crossed it, also has lymphodema. Any suggestions?

  • Thank you for advice.

Another thing I forgot to add. RT can damage the lining of the carotid arteries leaving you more prone to vascular disease including stroke so I take BP tablets and statins to keep to keep my BP and Cholesterol really low. At five years I will treat myself to a Carotid Doppler Ultra sound

  • Beesuit, Thank you, you don't realise what the treatment causes until you have some other ailment. My hubby has been prescribed some tablets for thyroid as rt may have damaged it, Hedwig

  • Thank God for the dentist my husband's cancer was found the same way treated as hayfever and rhinitis by the doctor. He has had chemoradiotherapy for tonsil base of tongue soft palette cancer and is now having immunotherapy for a secondary elsewhere . I struggle with seeing him like he is but tell myself that he's still here not the same but a new version . Yes. Very cathartic.
I talk to my bees. I told them I had cancer before I told my husband.
They buzzed back and said I’d be ok Wink

  • Hi, My hubby as recently come out in a red blotchy rash some look like blisters, I thought it was being in sunlight and having a sensitivity after have chemo/radio. Suggested this to first gp and he said we'll you're not having chemo now gave him cream. Still no better this week so saw a different gp said it might be because of treatment and gave him some more cream, has anybody had this same experience, Hedwig

  • Hi. Is this on his neck? Is he using sunblock? I was told factor 50 every day...sun or not for the first year then 30 thereafter
