Hi Y'all!  I am 4&1/2 yrs. Cancer free from Oral Cancer.  I had  Squimous Cell Carcinoma on the right side of my tongue.  Exactly 7 mon. later I had surgery to remove the 1inch tumor (the righPrayside of my tongue) along w the reconstruction of my tongue, & a Radical Neck Dissection because by this time the cancer had spread to my lymph nodes.  After healing from surgery for 2 months (& finaPrayy figuring out how to eat) I started 2 months of Chemo & Radiation.  Dang it, makes me nauscious just thinking thru all that ...& PrayPraise God  IM CANCER FREE!!  But I'm sure been having a hard time navigating recovery, accepting this "New Normal" (I HATE THAT TERM), & having some sort of quality of life.  I am not married & don't have children, & though I have family & a couple friends, this is the first time since I started this journey 5 yrs ago that I have found a anything  like this website, info, sharing knowledge... ALL OF THIS & I AM SO EXITED!   I am in tears y'all!!

  • Hi Charlotte. Well that’s a really ebullient introduction. Well done in getting so far and finding yourself fit and well. Accepting this new normal is pretty hard for some of us especially as our friends and family think we are cured as soon as we come out of treatment. You can’t play the cancer card for ever but sometimes it’s all you have.
I always give folk this link to look at and pass on to their  and dearest.

  • Hi Charlotte

Welcome to the forum and I am so glad you are now cancer free. Yes you’re right the after effects of the treatment does take some getting used to and adjusting to your ‘new normal’.

I had operations and radiotherapy for jaw cancer in 2013 and then in 2019. I got through the first cancer with support from family and my medical team but would have really benefited from being part of a forum like this one. I was so glad after my second cancer operation to find this forum as I found the support and experience of others invaluable. Wish I had found the forum the first time around as I felt very isolated as no one can understand what you are going through unless they have experienced it themselves.

You sound as though you might be American. Is that right? I am Australian and although there is a Cancer Council here it is not quite like Macmillan Cancer Support as their forums are very general so it is hard to find anyone with oral cancer on it.

I now appreciate every day for what it brings me and no longer take life for granted. I am soon going on a short holiday to Kangaroo Island in South Australia with my daughter and even though it is Winter I am going to do everything I can including quad biking (although maybe a bit slower than most) taking a sea lion tour and especially for Dani who is one of our Champions on this forum going to a bee farm.

Hope you are able to do some interesting things yourself over the next few months within Covid restrictions.

    Best wishes

    Lyn
