Hi ,I am new to the group. I am 2years,3months after chemo and radio therapy for NPC,a gruelling and hard struggle . I am told by my marvellous team that the cancer has gone and am feeling strong. However, probably, because of real problems with my mouth I have just had to have a tooth extraction,a back molar ,and the gum is healing but very slowly. I am so worried about the possible prospect of Osteoradionecrosis. My dentist who did the extraction is experienced and has been vigilant in checking me each week ..I am meticulous about hygiene using fluoride toothpaste ,and I use the Xylimelts to stimulate saliva . I know I have a lot of support keeping me checked out but this possible jaw decay is really getting me down . I wondered if anyone else advice or help to offer. Thankyou for accepting me into the group . Shecux
Hi Shecux and welcome to the community.
I had a wisdom tooth extracted after radiotherapy at my Maxillofacial hospital. My wound did heal but not as quickly as others previously, taking some six weeks before the hole had closed, so try not to worry about that aspect. Did you get antibiotics? I think they are crucial after post RT extraction. Keeping your mouth bacteria free with Chlorhedidine mouthwash aids recovery too and I used that for about a month, but do speak to your dentist.
You say your dentist is experienced, then they would know about ORN and will be able to reassure you. ORN is painful and if your mouth feels OK try not to worry.
Best of luck

Thankyou so much for your encouraging and fast response. It helps to know that someone else has experienced the same things . I am using mouthwash and am following all the guidelines. I only had a single dose of antibiotics before the procedure,I am reassured by the length of time you say yours took to heal so I will try not to worry ! Thanks again.
