Just starting my journey

Hi Everyone. I was diagnosed with cancer cells in 2 neck nodes just before Christmas but the primary was not showing on scans etc. I had a small op to have my tonsils removed and lots of biopsies in my mouth.

Luckily the primary was found in my right tonsil so that prevented further surgery. I started my treatment just this week.

I need 30 lots of radiotherapy and 5 lots of chemo over 6 weeks. The first week was scary not knowing what to expect but feeling a little nauseous due to chemo was as bad as it was so manageable. The anti sickness meds kept things at bay and I have been able to eat bland food.

it’s been an emotional rollercoaster coming to terms with what is happening and heartbreaking telling my family via video call etc due to Covid. Also I had my first op cancelled so the stress of the delays when I just needed action was awful.

On my way to hopeful recovery though and although I know it may get rocky, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Good luck to all of you in a similar situation and for those that have come out the other side, thanks for your inspiration

  • Hi Shell12

Glad that your primary was found as that must have been a great relief.

Now the treatment is underway as you say, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Hope your treatment is finished in no time and you can move on to much brighter things.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Shell. Just to wish you all the best for your treatment. I had a primary on my right tonsil too and had it removed in October, along with a 29 node neck dissection. That was followed by 30 fractions of radiotherapy and 5 sessions of chemo. I am ten weeks post treatment today and feeling well. My sense of taste has returned and I’m eating fairly normally, but for the lack of saliva which should return to a greater or lesser degree. I have some fluid build up under my chin and also a stiff neck along the scar line, but otherwise things are pretty good. The RT and chemo were not too bad, apart from neck burns as I didn’t take enough care moisturising. It will get uncomfortable the few weeks after RT ends so you will then need to keep up your painkiller regime, laxatives (important), calories and hydration. We all react slightly differently but the common factor is that it is a very effective treatment. All the best.

  • Thanks Raz. It will be good to have the advice and support from you all x

  • Thanks Lyn. Hopefully I might be well enough to enjoy at least some of the summer Fingers crossed x

  • Thanks Dani. It is comforting to know there are people who fully understand what I will go through and can give practical advice where possible x

  • Hi Mark. I am so pleased that you are mainly out of the other side of your journey, you seem to have managed really well. I don’t need a neck dissection so one less thing for me to worry about.

Thank you for the advice especially around the pain advice and laxatives, that’s one thing you don’t need to worry about with everything else going on lol x

  • Oh that’s good. The dissection is a pain in the neck, literally! Not having one should make things more comfortable for you. Good luck with week 2 Thumbsup

  • Hi Shell12

Glad they found the primary and your treatment is under way.

As you say, things may get rocky but lots of us here who have been through similar and available for support and advice should you need it.

Take things one day at a time and keep on top of the pain killers.

    Wishing you all the best.
