Can any one suggest anything to help the awful thick mucous that collects at the back of the throat during and after radiotherapy to the throat. My husband is unable to eat because of it constantly “hawking “ it up he’s gargling with bicarbonate of soda and difflam has to spit out saliva all the time because he can’t swallow so is being fed and getting fluids through PEG tube but weight has dropped off continually his sleep is constantly disturbed by the mucous so he is exhausted. Please any tipS

Thanks

  • Drinking lots, try swilling something fizzy like soda water or diet ginger ale.

Some people get a mucous thinning drug called carbocysteine.... helps some people

A nebuliser or head over a steaming bowl of water a few times a day. A humidifier next to the bed and keep the room warm.

Sip and spit is the only thing you can do when you have a throat full. It will get better.

Whereabouts in the treatment is he Cashmore?

  • hi Kim Dani has summed it up very well unfortunately most of us suffered the horrendous mucus  thick stringy slime . Hydration is one of the key things sim for 2 litres via tube or tiny  sips orally  I used nebuliser at least 6  times a day snd went through copious amounts of tissues every day.

I also was prescribed carbusistine to help thjn the mucus.
    hope thus helps.
min nrbuluer use either saline solution or booked cooled tsp water.
It does go as quickly as it came often replaced eith dry mouth though

He finished chemoradiotherapy yesterday has also had major neck dissection wound now breaking down due to radiotherapy burns, robotic surgery and tonsillectomy it’s been a long lonely isolating 10 months

  • Hi Kim

It may be worth asking the hospital if you can borrow a nebuliser.  I know some lend them out.

It may be of some comfort to know that now and the next couple of weeks your husband will be at the worse stage and after that he should very slowly start to recover.

    Take care both of you.

  • Hi Kim. The next few weeks will be pants.Do you have a district nurse to come out to help with the burns? That would be the ideal situation. Horrid to have to tackle this on your own.

  • Hi Kim unfortunately there is no quick fix for this , But finding what works best for your husband as we are all different. I was getting to the stage where I was being sick which would make my throat really sore and not want to do anything. I have literally finished my RT on the 29th and going through the neck burns which are healing now and I think the dreaded throat stuff is disappearing slowly but throat is still seriously sore. ALL The Best To Your Husband and You Regards Min

Hi Hazel, I am also suffering with this awful thick mucous and the hospital have given out all the nebulisers so I have ordered one to try, do I order the saline solution?

    Thank you

    Ian

  • Hi Ian I was given it by hospital. Distilled water if you can get it 9 g of salt to 1 litre of water. Or the saline I was given in hospital came in 5 mil sachets.I alternated between saline and distilled water as sometimes the saline irritated me.
    Good luck Hazel xx

  • Yep. Saline is just salty water. Make your own. I managed with olbas oil in hot water. I’m not sure you can do much more than manage it but being proactive with it gives you something to do and some semblance of control.
I hope it isn’t too troublesome.
