Hi, my name is Ann and I'm looking after my 82 year old mum who has throat cancer. She is going on tmrrow for a nasal feeding tube. I'm not sure what to expect. How difficult is it to get used to, how will she manage etc. I would appreciate and help or information anyone has on this.

  • Hi Ann, it’s a quick procedure, it feels a bit strange but shouldn't hurt. Your mum will be sat up straight in a chair, the nurse will insert a thin tube into on nostril, down her throat into her stomach. They'll measure and do a PH test to check it's in the right place. The feeds are pre-prepared in a bag and easily attaches to the Ng tube. You and your mum will be talked through the process and then someone will come to your mums home and go through it again. Flushing after feeds is essential to stop it from getting blocked. This is easily done with a syringe provided with your pack. I used the backpack during my feeds as they take a while and I'd carry on with my day rather than  be restricted to sitting I'm the same place. Personally, I found the NG a lifesaver not only with nourishing food that's important during treatment but also for medication and water, keeping hydrated is so much easier to do. One of the Macmillan nurses advised me to get these nasal plasters to keep it in place better. They were a game-changer for me.

This my personal experience and I'm sure the procedure can differ between hospitals. It certainly wasn't as bad as it sounded. The nurses as usual were brilliant.  Hope all goes well tomorrow.

  • Thank you so much, that put my mind at ease a bit more. She's so frail as struggles even with water now. I'm hoping she will feel better once she has some nutrition in her. Do you still have one or was it temporary
