I was due to have my salivary duct cancer removed plus a neck dissection to remove lymph nodes and a cheek reconstruction on Tuesday 20th October 2026, but today they cancelled the operation until 3rd November 2026 as both surgeons who initially saw me and offered to do the operation we’re both not free on that date. It’s an aggressive high grade cancer and I’m concerned that the delay may cause the cancer to spread. I’m 82 and until the surgeons saw me in person my only treatment was ADT hormone suppressant but after a face to face appointment as I’m physically fit and still work they offered me surgery. But it’s now delayed which worries me.
kind regards
john.
Hi John
That's not the greatest news but two weeks in the grand scheme of things really shouldn't make too much difference. I know you'll worry but hang in there. Hugs
Thanks Dani,
I know two weeks is not the end of the world, but I have been building up to the surgery and considering ADT finally deciding on surgery only to have it cancelled. But time will pass and eventually I’ll have the cancer removed.
kind regards
John.
I know John. I really feel for you.
Sometimes I hate what’s happening to our NHS. Once you get there everyone steps up and usually you can’t fault your treatment. It’s the getting there.
I had to wait months in Wales and my referral got downgraded to routine by some clerk!
I know how it feels. Xx
Hi Dani,
I was really worried anyway and the delay hasn’t helped I keep googling the operation and after effects and personal experiences from the forums, which doesn’t help. My daughter keeps telling me off. But I’ll get over it, thank you for your support.
kind regards
John.
I keep googling the operation and after effects and personal experiences from the forums, which doesn’t help.
I think we need to get this into context. People who post their experiences here or elsewhere on social media are often at the extreme end of reality. Those of us who have a fairly uneventful time don’t post so you’re just getting a snapshot. There’s no getting away from the fact that the op will be a challenge but you’ll be looked after and you will get through. Keep busy and do t google any more because the answer you really want isn’t there, there are only rabbit holes.
You’re correct the answers aren’t there and I shouldn’t be looking for all the negative stuff. I really appreciate your input and advice from now I’ll keep away from Google, this forum has been a Godsend in terms of support and some really encouraging experiences. It’s just the whole cancer thing has been like a dream or should I say a nightmare, it’s like unreal as if it’s not happening to me.
Thank you for your sound advice, I’ll keep away from the rabbit holes.
kind regards
John.
Oh blooming heck ,but better to have the surgeons you need than possibly a substitute...I was wondering how you'd been getting on and looking for update posts....Nov will soon be here and in the big scheme....my dad's cancer was highly aggressive too and he's almost 80...he's salivary gland cancer, secondary, primary unknown...and he's doing well.
Good luck
Hi Redtree 26,
I appreciate the news about your dad I hope he continues to do well, it’s encouraging for what I’m going to go through.
Hopefully, I’ll report back after the surgery that all the cancer has gone.
Thank you for enquiring.
Kind regards
John.
Good evening John, as Dani mentioned, two weeks will not affect the outcome that much, I have had a similar experience when I was in the hospital and the day of the operation it was called off so I fully understand the anxiety it caused. My first operation was very similar to yours but mine was for " floor of the mouth cancer" but I had the neck dissection, saliva gland and lymph nodes removed. I know I was quite a bit younger but the operation went well. Please try and steer clear off Dr Google as it tends too make matters worse where you start to overthink. We are all different and recover and react differently. I wish you all the best for your operation in two weeks, take care.
Chris
