Blister on tongue after surgery

Hi ,

this is my first time posting , I was diagnosed with tongue cancer on June 18th , came as a shock as I had a growth on my tongue for my months (growing out the way) and everyone said it was nothing sinister. Biopsy to remove it showed it was cancerous and on the 14th of July I had part of my tongue removed with margins and lymph node removal on my right side .
my results came back that my lymph nodes were cancer free , so were the margins and that I only had moderate pre cancerous cells in my tongue , so great news .

im in recovery and things were going well until September , when i started getting a blister on the side of my tongue ,  it would appear , burst and be gone in a day . This happened a few times and when i seen my surgeon he elected to biopsy the area , this was two weeks ago and im still waiting on results . What’s worse is the area he biopsied then had a blister appear a week later so the area cut out made no difference . It’s now getting me down as it appears every two to three days always in the same spot and always disappears the next day and leaves no mark

this is making me so anxious as I just want to be better and normal again as I’m only 40 with young kids

has anyone else had these weird blisters that could maybe shed a light on what it could be or maybe help put my mind at ease ?

thank you in advance

Is your now deformed tongue rubbing on something? I get a blister on my tongue if I don't wear my night guard for a week or so

  • I did wonder this , I had my wisdom tooth extracted when I had the biopsy to remove my original tumour so I don’t have a tooth directly where the blister is appearing ? Unless it’s the tooth in front or my top teeth ?
I honestly have no idea and whilst I totally get why my surgeon just automatically biopsied the area he never really discussed what else it could be caused by so I’m sitting here a ball of anxiety every time it reappears

  • Something you eat? Is there a common denominator?

  • I don’t think so , I’ve been eating a lot of softer foods because I didn’t want to risk anything happening. I’ve been racking my brain about what could be causing it but I don’t have a clue . The only thing I thought was corsodyl mouthwash? Maybe that’s irritated it ? But I don’t know

  • Hi Sweetpea. I got a very sore and inflamed gum recently and like you was racking my brain to try and think what could be causing it. I saw the dentist at the Dental Hospital. It turned out that the toothbrush I was using was too rough although I thought it was soft enough. She gave me an even softer one and that did the trick. Try stopping the  corsodyl mouthwash and use bicarb and salt mouthwashes instead and see if that helps at all.

  • Thank you Sophie ,

im awaiting a call this week hopefully with my biopsy results and I will try that , I was doing the salt washes anyways as I had to after the biopsy but maybe changing a toothbrush might help as well

I’m just so fed up and wanting to not have to worry about anything else on my tongue after everything that has happened the last few months

  • Good evening Sweetpea27dc0362, I'm similar to Dani, where part of my tongue was rubbing on one of my teeth, making it quite sore, causing blisters. I saw my consultant, who said that one of my teeth was jagged and cutting into my tongue, so they filed it back. Thankfully, it did the trick. Good luck with the biopsy results.

  • Snap Chris. I had the same issue too and had one of my teeth filed and that fixed the problem.

  • Thank you both Chris and Sophie , if it turns out to be my teeth then they can happily take them all at this point just want it fixed and to stop worrying

  • Something so simple Lyn yet it caused a bit of worry. x
