Hi all. I finished 35 days chemo/radiation in January and whilst undergoing i gave up alcohol. I have started drinking beer again and seem to have loost much of my resilience and seem also to be suffering much more in way of mood swings and anxiety. Does anyone know if this can be part of the recovery?? Can my ability to process have been affected-do i need to just give it up? Seems a shame as i really felt the benefit in terms of social engagement and just starting to feel normal again.
If anyone has any information or just a comment i would appreciate!!

Hi Jimbo
i am seven years post treatment and feel effects of even one pint of beer but then I am old so maybe it’s that.
But… as one of our other posters, suffering from a recurrence pointed out, why put a known carcinogen in your mouth ( thanks OzStu ) after you’ve already had one cancer there.
My oncologist said it was ok in moderation. I have the odd pint or two but now rarely, and NEVER touch neat spirits. It’s asking for trouble
If you enjoy the social interaction regularly then my advice would be to switch to AF Guiness

We suffer from PTSD to some extent so moods being up and down is fairly normal.
Have a read of this which goes some way to explain our recovery
It does get better. You are still early in your recovery.

Personally I still drink. Both beer and the occasional spirits. I find that the slightly thicker texture of a good real ale helps me replicate saliva when eating. Water just does not cut it for me! What I find very difficult is wine with the exception of a good rose or some bubbles...
I was never and heavy drinker and don't drink to excess now, but it is useful and life is short so if it gives pleasure then why not. You know the risks so you make your own decisions based on what you want from life.
As to the mood swings I think Hazel has summed it up nicely. PTSD (at all different levels) can affect us in many different forms at different times. Speak to your team (or GP) if it is really worrying you and see if they can get you some help.
I used to love the bourbons, especially barrel strength.. but now I'm an A/F drinker... do I miss it.. yes, but if I was a smoker I'd knock them on the head as well.. going through what we went through is something we didn't want to go through in the first place, so why tempt fate..
as for PTSD, yes, I also have the odd moment..
