Struggling waiting diagnosis

Need help & advise on how to cope & stop scrolling endlessly through google etc for answers.

Lump on side of neck, no other symptom (although now after looking through google I think I have every symptom under the sun). My mum first noticed the lump probably 2 months ago & it looked like a swollen lymph node. Then I went to doctor probably about 3 weeks ago as it became more noticeable & I began to fixate on it. He ran bloods that came back clear. MRI done & results came back next day marking it as suspicious. I asked the doctor what was seen in terms of suspicious & he just said it is on the lymph node & no clear reason can be seen, its about 2-3cm & is persistent. Referral done to ENT & I’m presuming it is going to be cancer which is terrifying me & I struggle already with anxiety which means I’m now in a downward loop.

Doctor did say from MRI scan no other lymph nodes seems to be elevated.

It does seem to be getting bigger slightly.

Any help or advise would be welcome, even reading some positive recovery stories does help.

  • Aw you're welcome lovely.  I know exactly where you're at and it's a damned tough job being a carer.  I also think that's great you've started counselling, as the last thing you both need is more stress.  JoyI know it's mega difficult, trying to sleep when you've got your mind trained on that date, but try to relax and focus on everything that's happened today - the more you concentrate, the harder your brain will have to work to keep you awake.  Give it a try and if it fails to get you off, come back and have a go at me!  xxx

  • Good luck for today Patrick, I’ve got everything crossed for you Fingers crossed Please let us know how you get on.

    Hugs from west  Wales.

  • Good luck for the 24th Sarah. I, like yourself and Gill, have nursed my husband for the last 7 months. Stage 4 P16 negative tonsil, tongue and lymph node cancer. It’s been brutal at times, my profile details our journey … but we got the final all clear yesterday. We’re over the moon, the relief is unbelievable. Wishing you the same news on the 24th.

    Hugs Debbie xxx

  • Thank you for this Gill. I've no real problem getting off to sleep atm but for the last week or so, with results looming, I keep waking up at 5.30am & that's it, no going back to sleep! Trying to look at the positives in that it gives me an early start to the day & I can get lots done!! Hopefully once get results on Thursday my sleeping will improve...... My husband's best friend is over from the States ATM & so spending the day with them today which will be a good distraction & take away from the 'scanxiety'. Thanks again lovely, Sarah

  • Thank you for taking the time to respond Debbie. Will let you all know how we get on with the results on Thursday ..... Best, Sarah x

  • Thank you Debbie.
So appointment went ok, they were all very nice. Surgeon came in & had a chat, didn’t really give much away only saying further tests are needed & is ordering a CT scan. He did a physical exam & took history. Nurse did the tube up the nose & down the throat, no tumour is obvious for now which I suppose is some positive news in a way. I know thats not uncommon but thinking it must be small if there which is surely good. FNA biopsy done (lump seems to have considerably shrunk, I suppose that is normal with the fluid taken). They said next appointment is likely Friday week & said it does take time now with all the tests but I’m in the system now. Depending on biopsy & if they have enough according to the lab they may need to repeat.

So now I just have to try to take my mind off it somehow will I wait again.

    Thanks all xxx
