Looking for advice on timeframes

My partner went to the hospital last week as part of an urgent referral from GP due to a lump on his tongue. The consultant examined this and said he was then referring him for an urgent scan and biopsy which is taking place this week as he does believe this could be cancer. We are due to get married in 7 weeks so my question is how long is it between having the biopsy, to diagnosis to starting your treatment as I would rather postpone everything instead of delaying treatment.

  • Hi and welcome. Sorry to hear your news.

I think you might be looking at a timeline of between six to eight weeks.

  • Difficult decision, a lot depends on diagnosis and treatment plan, oncology should be able to advise, chemoradiotherapy is a difficult treatment for some and may take some time to recover from, I had head and neck cancer, a feeding tube inserted to aid recovery, 6 months until I felt human again.

  • Thank you for your advice. It’s just so hard been in this limbo stage but I think in my heart of hearts I know we will need to postpone.

  • Hi Little tilly, sorry to hear this. I can only tell you my time line, I was diagnosed in the middle of July 2017, had my tonsils out mid August and my treatment started beginning of October. This is of course is not a set time line, some peoples  are longer and some are shorter. I really hope the scan and biopsy show it to be nothing serious. If you need us someone is always around to help if they can.

You know ...I would. The pressure of getting everything right for the wedding on top of the even worse pressure of getting well again would be immense. Of course it depends on what the treatment would be but I can say that six months was about right for me after six weeks of radiotherapy. Simple surgery may well be shorter.

Better to have a sunny future ahead of you on your special day rather than an uncertain one.

Congratulations, by the way. It will be something for both of you to hold onto

  • Hello good morning everyone. I'm sorry to hear that. This is my first experience here.First, I want to offer my comfort and prayers to everyone who is going through this difficult time.I will leave this report about my experience.  After the biopsy on April 23rd, I received my diagnosis last Wednesday, May 21st. Unfortunately I didn't have a favorable diagnosis but we're going to face this battle. But each case is different and your partner's case will not necessarily be the same, I pray that it will be something positive for him. I am completely at your disposal and will share my entire experience. What I have to report so far is that I am being wonderfully well attended to and well supported by everyone.

  • I’m so sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Thank you for sharing your experience so far. I’m glad to hear you are been looked after. Good luck with your journey, take care and stay positive x

  • Hi Little Tilly, so sorry to hear about your partner's condition, not knowing whether 'it could be nothing' at the moment is nerve racking, unfortunately my husband wasn't as lucky (I guess deep down we new so)from when we had our first consultation to first MRIs,scans etc. to start of treatment six weeks gone by,he had 30 rounds RT + 2 rounds CT, with the dredded site effects kicking in at about 3wks in, not knowing what your partners diagnosis and treatment plan would be at this point,I would wait till you have this info, and if god forbid that he needs to go on this journey ,I would probably go ahead with treatment and recovery first, and then look forward to the 'big day'. My husband had a PEG fitted,to help with eating, lost his voice was always tired and fatigued, on top of everything else, his mental state was allover the place. But as I said, wait until you get the prognosis, and then make a decision together, all the best wishes and hugs for now.  Let us know where you guys go from here. Fellow wife Mel x

  • Sorry to hear your news so close to your special day.

Most of my appts were 2 weeks apart, it seems to be standard  time after scans/biopsies  etc. I saw consultant  first in Jan then biopsy 3rd Feb, 2 weeks later told I had tonsil cancer. More scans etc , had neck dissection to remove lymph nodes  on 18th March then robotic surgery to remove  tumour on 26th March. So all done in 3 months. My care has been amazing, I'm now 8 weeks post op.

You and your partner will both need lots of support and your minds will be all over the place. He will probably  have allsorts of different  apps to attend.

Fingers crossed  for both of you. This is a great place for support.

  • Thank you so much for sharing your story with me. I hope your husband is recovering well, he sounds a true fighter. I will keep you posted on our journey. I am very much in the same place as you were… deep down you just know what’s coming and it’s just the waiting game X
