My FIL is 86 , finished radiotherapy November 15th 2024 for voice box cancer .
He did really well and all good until late May 2025 when voice starts to croak and complaining of difficulty in swallowing fluids as chokes but can eat solids normally
They have said its late onset mucositis , not reoccurance but its dire.
Now has a RIG, is NBM and currently an inpt on steroids to reduce the swelling etc
He is finding the thick sticky secretions too hard to clear
Has anyone got any advice or tips they used
I'm reading about carbocystine - he's not been offered that .
He has a mouthwash but I read some are better than others - advise please
Anyone with any tips at all on mucocitis please let me know - all welcome
I read cbd gummies can be good - anyone used these ?
Thanks in advance
Meg
Hi
Sorry to hear about your Father in law is in. trouble with ulcers and sticky saliva so long after treatment end
Caphosol Gelclair and Difflam are the mouthwashes I was given. Caphosol helps the soreness and Difflam is a NSAID which helps with the acute pain caused by ulceration. Difflam has a numbing effect.
Salt/Soda Bic mouthwashes are pretty good for loosening mucous and they can be used several times a day. Can he gargle? That would help shift it too but if not no worries. There's no set strength as it seems the more people you ask the more answers you get. I made mine up fresh every time in a mug of water with a four finger pinch of both. I was never offered Carbocisteine but I know it helped others here.
I asked my oncologist about CBD and he said it was safe but in the end I never tried, but maybe it might help with the ulcer pain.

Thanks Dani .. he has not got any ulcers, thankfully, just massive swelling of the tissues in the throat which is making him unable to swallow as the epiglottis isn't sitting correctly due to the swelling and has narrowed his airway so no gargling or he aspirates
He has been given Gelclair but not Difflam or Caphosol - I will ask about those
I've read the CBD has an anti inflammatory effect
Many thanks for your advice - all welcome
Best wishes
Margaret
.
Hi again Margaret. Definitely ask about Difflam and maybe NSAID like ibuprofen even.
